Another Great Book,
By
This review is from: Jungle Drums (Hardcover)
The Aussie artist/book illustrator Graeme Base remains best remembered for his 1986 'alphabet book' Animalia, which has sold over 2 million copies world-wide.In latter years Base has published a series of books, aimed at children (but not exclusively), in which he has thoroughly explored his fascination with the animal kingdom (The Eleventh Hour; The sign of the Seahorse; The Waterhole). JUNGLE DRUMS follows Ngiri Mdogo - 'the smallest warthog in Africa' - as he is presented with a mystical pair of bongos, capable of granting him wishes. The book will certainly be extremely popular with its intended audience. Kids will marvel at the brightly illustrated animals and the interesting hint of Swahili vocabulary. Yet JUNGLE DRUMS continues a several year trend: Base simply doesn't pack each page with the mind-exploding level of detail he once did. It is still an exceptional childrens' book, but lets hope Graeme spends a few years on the next one and blows everyone away with a detailed and unexpected title: more 'Animaliaesque' in terms of its age appeal.

I bought this book for my 5 year old and it is one of our favorites. The story is interesting and the pictures are fantastic. A great plus is the fun you and your children will have searching for the hidden wildebeast. They are always easy to find! Great for a gift as well!

One of his best!,

Being an artist and art teacher, Graeme Base books are some of my favorite. I purchase every book when it comes out. The great stories, and the fantastic illustrations...and this book is not exception. Some of his best illustrations, and a great story in the ugly duckling realm with a twist or two. Highly suggest for all ages!

Differences,
By KJ - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Jungle Drums (Hardcover)
In a world where there are so many differences it is nice to find literature that can be used to help children learn to accept not only others but themselves. This is a great book to open discussions for children regarding the importance of appreciating and embracing the characteristics and attributes that we have all been given and celebrate our differences rather than fear them or belittle or bully others because of them. An added treasure in the book are trying to locate the hidden and evolving animals as the story evolves. A very gifted writer and artist!
