If you've never seen the movie, you have in store for you Tim Allen's best and most endearing film performance, a sharp and attractive one from Sam Huntington as Tim's 13-year old son, and the majestic JoBeth Williams as Tim's wife and Sam's mother.
Beginning and ending in Venezuela, the story is closely based on Little Indian, Big City, but retells it with added warmth and wit. Tim discovers he has a son when he visits the wife who left him to work as a doctor in the jungle, neither of them then knowing she was carrying his child. The bulk of the ensuing comedy is the culture clash arising when Tim brings son Sam ("Mimi-Siku") back to New York and his yuppie lifestyle.
Throw in the Russian Mafia (a well-balanced turn by David Ogden Stiers, juggling menace and farce) and a burgeoning love affair between two thirteen year-olds (á la Romeo and Juliet), and you have an often-laugh-out-loud family Disney comedy with moments of real visual and musical beauty.
Even our sons in their late teens still love this!
