A bit OTT 19 Jun 2011
By Phil
Format:Kindle Edition
Well I did laugh out loud at many parts of this book, 24 years at sea from the Lowest deck rating to chief Officer I did recognise certain situations and characters but come on, I think their was a bit of'Gilding the Lily' here (for example the Bulk carriers incident).
An OK read I suppose, but some of it a bit far fetched.

I know... I was there! 25 July 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a very entertaining book for anyone, but for a seaman who knew the traditional British Merchant Navy in the days of its swansong, it is also powerfully evocative.

'Jumping Ships' and its prequel, 'Ocean Boulevard', are pacy, witty, fun books which use some wonderful imagery to recreate a fascinating world which became extinct in the early `eighties. They both made me laugh out loud at times, and brought a lump to my throat at others.

As one who has not only read both books but was also there, I can both recommend them as a highly entertaining read and assure the doubter that they are a lot closer to the truth than many may believe!

You won't regret buying these books.

Having read Ocean Boulevard and loved it - I read Jumping Ships and loved it even more! David Baboulene has a knack of making you really feel part of the adventure in a way even Bill Bryson can't always manage.

I was genuinely sad when it was over and can't wait for the third instalment. Cracking stuff.

(A word of caution: Reading this in a public place will get you funny looks during the 'laugh out loud' bits - and there are plenty!)

Tells it as it really was but with bells on!
Another excellent and hilarious episode in the sea going life of Windy. Those who were not at sea, especially in the 60s & 70s, will find it hard to believe that we got up to such... Read more
