As preposterous action movies go, Jumper is pleasantly unpretentious and breezily entertaining. A young man named David (Hayden Christensen) discovers he has the power to teleport (or "jump") anywhere he can visualize. After using this power to steal and make a comfortable life for himself, he pursues the girl he longed for in school (Rachel Bilson, The O. C.). But as he does so, another jumper (Jamie Bell, Billy Elliot) and a pack of fanatical jumper-hunters called paladins (led by a white-haired Samuel L. Jackson) crashes into David's freewheeling life. Jumper wastes no time trying to explain how jumping works or delving into the hows and whys of the paladins; this is an alluring fantasy of power directed at a pell-mell pace by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Go). There's a brief moment when it feels like the movie will bog down in romance and vague gestures towards character development--happily, that's the moment when Bell appears and the whole movie shifts into overdrive. You might wish that Bell and Christensen had swapped roles; Bell has a far more engaging personality, and Christensen's bland good looks might better suit a more aggressive character. Nonetheless, Jumper has oodles of dynamism and nifty visual effects to propel its comic-book storyline forward. A variety of recognizable actors in bit parts (such as Diane Lane and Kristen Stewart, Panic Room) suggest that the filmmakers are laying the groundwork for sequels. Based on a critically-acclaimed science-fiction novel by Steven Gould. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been so much better, 13 Mar 2009

Ok, so I was not expecting too much after some of the reviews I have seen, but I don't think it's quite as bad as a lot of people make out. I honestly think that the weakest link is Hayden Christensen, who as a character and probably as an actor, does not make you care for him at all. He plays a very similar role to Anakin Skywalker, and to be honest, you don't really care if he lives or dies. His girlfriend Rachel Bilson is the same, she is too easily lead and you think she really deserves what's coming to her. The brightest point of the movie is Jamie Bell. This is the guy from Billy Elliot, and my God, what a performance. I did think his accent was a bit strange, but if you see the extras you realise that's how he speaks! Back to the movie... it had some great ideas, but seemed just a bit short. There is plenty of background, but not enough to get you thinking, so not enough explanation for the `war' or his family history. When you see the extras, you realise maybe these are lined up for movies 2 & 3, however due to this movie, we will probably never find out......... In short, good ideas, not enough substance and should have been so much more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good!, 17 Jun 2008
The Blu-ray,

Excellent picture quality & sound! Very impressed. Cool cover art, plenty of special features, all of which are in HD!

The Movie,

A very unique superhero film, with an interesting story of a boy who learns that he has the power of teleportation and the benefits that come with it (and later the drawbacks). Lots of future potential! Now excuse me while I go & buy the books!

3.0 out of 5 stars Jump!, 17 Dec 2008
By DL Productions UK (Merseyside, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I have to say I don't enjoy these types of movies usually, all the superhero stuff wasn't my bag as a kid, I just didn't grow up with comic books. I rented this because I thought it would be rather cool, with a lot of time travel, and I have to say I'm pretty lukewarm about it.

David is a jumper, he can move from one place to another without moving himself. He discovered this talent when he nearly died on the river trying to save a present he'd bought for his lover Millie. When he discovers he can jump; he decides to take off as everyone thinks he's dead, and does bad deeds like rob banks, but when a jumper hunter comes after him, he soon realises his powers are not that good after all.

This isn't a bad film, I just felt it was a bit limited in scope. I did enjoy Samuel L Jackson's role as the jumper hunter, he really did a good job, but I felt the rest of the cast were not as emotive, and lacked that kick this movie should have got. The action scenes are amazing and the filming of David in Egypt were amazing, and looked really fine on Blu-Ray disk.

The blu-ray is a dream - excellent selection of extras and the film is even audio described, which is a real bonus. The audio is uncompressed DTS which is nice too. I was really impressed with the amount of documentaries on here, and the menu is rather cool. This will keep you entertained for around 5hrs, so set some time aside, because you will want to see the documentaries.

3/5 for the film, 5/5 for the transfer and 5/5 for the extras.

Lets hope more studios take note!

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining if empty
It's a good, fun action movie with 2007's best special effect gimmick. Christiansen makes some amends for Star Wars here, but it's Jamie Bell who steals the show.
