1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing., 13 Jan 2008
By Andrew Duffy (Newcastle Upon Tyne) - See all my reviews

I'm quite the avid reader at times - I will churn my way through the classics, and the pulp. Its rare that a book is so poor that I can't even finish it.

The main problem with this book is the author's inability to "show, not tell". Every character got a minimum of a page of description when first introduced, followed by half a page or so each time you saw them. It felt more like reading a laundry list.

When the story did get going, it wasn't so bad but when the author decided to describe a main character for the 3rd time, I gave up.

2.0 out of 5 stars A good read let down by simple mistakes, 12 May 2009
By C. Barnes "Scrabblemouse" (Coventry, England) - See all my reviews
Jump Cut is basically a good read. It ticks all the right boxes in terms of narrative, dialogue, pacing, and each character gets their fair run of pages. A previous reviewer has commented on the descriptive depth of the author and I do agree to a point. It isn't really necessary to describe what each character is wearing every day, but I didn't find it too distracting and it can help with painting a mental picture.

My problems with this book stem from some rather glaring continuity errors and skewed characterisations. The characters interacted but they just didn't seem to have the same dynamic quality that comes across in the series. Also, the novel mentions certain events that occurred in season 2's 'Legacy', putting this novel after that point. But, there is also a description of Dr Reid that has him wearing his glasses. Although this may seem like a nit-pick, Reid stops wearing his glasses in 'The Big Game', which takes place long before 'Legacy' This character's animosity towards Prentiss is also mentioned, even though this character development was shown to have been finished with in 'Ashes and Dust', which also takes places before 'Legacy'

This stuff may seem like going overboard on details, but I think it's important to keep novelisations true to the series they stem from, as it is mostly likely to be fans of the show that read them.
So, overall it's a decent read if you have a few hours to kill but die-hard fans may feel a little short-changed.
