Begin with a complete Sudoku grid and the object is to "paint" out blocks so that no number appears twice in any row or column. mid Masyu: A charming but sophisticated invention where you are required to "string" black-and-white "pearls" with a series of vertical and horizontal lines that form a continuous loop. mid Nurikabe: Beginning with a grid of squares scattered with numbers seemingly placed at random, the idea is to paint the black squares to make walls, leaving patches of white behind.

If you are unfamiliar with Japanese puzzles, this book is the ideal introduction. Each set of puzzles is preceded by a tutorial which not only explains the rules but also suggests easy-to-follow strategies for solving them. Each set of puzzles are then divided into three sections, namely, 'Childs play', 'A pleasant challenge', 'Difficult for mere mortals'. For the puzzles I hadn't come across before, these were great for developing my skills and I then found I could do the harder puzzles in other books. For those puzzles that I was already familiar with, I found the 'child's play' sections were too easy. So, if you are already experienced in Sudoku, Kakuro, Hitori, Nurikabe, Masyu and Sudoku X, this may not be the book for you. But if you are new to some/all of the above, I would highly recommend it.

An excellent large book of puzzles. A half of the puzzles are Sudokus and Kakuros and the rest are puzzles you may not have come across before including Hitori, Masyu and, my particular favourites, Nurikabe.

This is full of puzzles and there were all sorts of new ones which I hadn't tried before and thoroughly enjoyed. I bought it to take on holiday but one criticism is that it is very big - partly because it has so many pages but also because the pages are larger than an average paperback so it weighs a bit more than I would have liked for hand baggage. The puzzles are well organised and divided into three levels - child's play, a pleasant challenge and difficult for mere mortals. Even the hardest didn't present a huge challenge and most were completed quickly - for example there seem to be far more numbers filled in in the sudokus than I would normally expect. If you want tough puzzles this is not for you.
