No, not that Julius Caesar! This has nothing to do with Roman history, but a lot to do with nineteenth-century cricket. This Julius Caesar was one of the biggest names in cricket during the 1850s and 1860s, including being part of the first ever overseas cricket tour and one of Surrey’s first star players. Geoff Amey has undertaken a lot of research to bring Caesar’s story to life – I found the chapters about the sad end to Caesar’s life, including a tragic shooting and the suicide of his son, to be a particularly good read.
