5.0 out of 5 stars Bravo Bravo!, 30 Sep 2005
Fantastic!

My favourite drama when I was a kid. Always a big treat to stay up late on a Saturday night to watch Jean Darblay and co racing around in a mk 2 Ford Escort fighting crime in Hartley....

And on DVD it looks as good as ever. Yes, the clothes, hair and cars are ancient, yes, the idea of a woman inspector isn't as shocking as it was in 1980, yes, there are some guest appearences from various now aging soap stars which are worth a giggle or two but underlying all that sniggering is some fine acting, scenary and storylines. A few bits are unintentionally hilarious- two detectives in a vicar's mustard coloured Austin Allegro in a 'high speed' pursuit against a con man on a nicked moped being the best one...

DVD is nicely packaged but shame that no extras could have been dug up from somewhere. General viewing quality seems ok on my geriatric dvd player.

If you are an aging 80's kid like me, buy it. Worth every penny to see ball breaking Jean kicking arse with her dopey motley crew of coppers... roll on series 2

4.0 out of 5 stars THE THINKING MAN'S LADY COPPER, 24 Aug 2006

Was it really back in 1980 that this series starring Stephanie Turner shown ??. At this time I was just entering Secondary School and cop shows then seemed new and exciting. This though dated was a good series which lasted for an amazing 6 series. Women Inspector Darbley is in charge of Hartley Police Station in the Yorkshire division. The Guys at the station take a dim view of her taking over not least because she is a women. Which today seems daft but then I guess it was a new idea , how times have changed for the better !. The crimes range from con men on stolen mopeds chased by an Austin Allegro, to men with guns in hold-ups on a local farm. This is a very rural series much in the vain of 'Heartbeat' but set in the present time. As this first series was made in 1979 they drive very retro Escort MK2 panda cars. And the clothes and the hair now are a laugh , but this is a very good series and brings back alot of memories for me. Of coming home from school and sitting in front of the Tv on the cold winter nights of 1980 to watch this on the BBC. Of the Dvd there are no extras which is a shame , but this is a good buy if only to revel in the 1980's again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Juliet Bravo -Series1, 8 Nov 2006
By Gregory Shanley (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I really enjoyed this series and after catching a few episodes on cable, decided to buy this first series on DVD and I have really enjoyed it.
Juliet Bravo was a drama series about woman police inspector,Jean Darbley(Stephanie Turner)arriving in the Yorkshire town of Hartley and dealing with sexist comments and in particular, one Sergeant Beck,(David Ellison)who treats her like bad smell in the opening episode.
Things get off to a bad start, for Jean,in the opening episode,a man commits suicide after seizing his daughter, and Stephanie Turner potrays the anguish very well.
The late, great Patricia Hayes makes a guest appearance in the 2nd episode as a darling old Irish woman, who has been stealing cheques from her work because a local rogue has been kind to her and she simply refuses to name him.
Despite the age of the drama, the camera work is very impressive and every episode contains a good story.
A young Kevin Whately appears in an episode,as a young cop turning to alcohol with tragic results and Joanna Whalley-Kilmer appears as a teenager in the opening episode.
Jean's husband,Tom(David Hargreaves) becomes a social worker and in one episode,Jean and Tom are against each other in court, when an unfit father is in court, for assaulting his daughter.
The marriage of Jean and Tom eventually breaks up in later seasons and Stephanie Turner finally decided after three series,to leave and the BBC unusually decided to carry the series on and as the series was named after the call sign,Juliet Bravo,a new female inspector,Kate Longton(Anna Carteret)took over from series 4-6.
Kate was younger, more glamourous and more outgoing than Jean,it would have been nice to see the two characters meet but that didn't happen.
I look forward to viewing the other seasons too.

I enjoyed it. In fact, it was better than I remember. In my memory, it was annoyingly PC, and Jean Darblay was this kind of superwoman who was there to prove that she could be... Read more
