Product Description

Product Description

This insightful biography by experienced show-business biographers Tim Ewbank and Stafford Hildred charts the remarkable life of the tea-planter's daughter, born in India, who blossomed from troubled Sussex schoolgirl into the striking young woman who sashayed to stardom down a Bradford street in the film Billy Liar. Julie became the Face of 1965, won an Oscar for her role in "Darling", was courted by London and Hollywood's most eligible men, including Warren Beatty, and glowed with beauty in "Dr Zhivago". Off and on screen, her life has been fascinating, and only a woman with her spirit would have turned her back on Hollywood at the height of her fame to embrace a simpler life in Wales. In recent years, she has only rarely been tempted back into the limelight, but her most recent appearance, in "Away from Her", has led to another Oscar nomination and a renewal of interest in one of Britain's most successful, yet private, actresses.

About the Author

After graduating from Aberdeen University, Tim Ewbank became a Fleet Street show-business writer. He has worked as a TV correspondent for several national newspapers, including the Daily Mail, and has worked in television and radio. He was the launch editor of the Sky TV Guide and is a regular contributor to Now magazine. Stafford Hildred is one of Britain's best-known television critics and show-business writers. After a long spell in Fleet Street, he worked for ITV. He comes from Lincolnshire but now lives in Derbyshire. With Tim Ewbank, he has also written best-selling biographies of Rod Stewart, David Jason, John Thaw and Joanna Lumley.

It's hard to swallow a biography that kicks off by getting the age of its subject categorically wrong. But if you can get over that & other glaring errors then this is an insightful account of possibly the most naturally talented, beautiful, loyal, principled, down to earth & sought after actress Britain has ever produced. Christie's journey from birth in India, early development in the south east & London, Hollywood stardom & then simplicity in Wales is well told. Clarity is also given to the girl who openly defied yet became inextricably linked to being one of several ultimate icons of the swinging 60's. However it's always going to be difficult for biographers to get anywhere near the heart of a person who effortlessly found fame, shuns celebrity culture yet pops back with ease into the limelight whenever she chooses. Despite this, we do learn more about the actress but not the woman who defined a sexual era.
