This is a most beautiful book. The illustrations alone are worth the price of it. Especially effective is James McMullan's evocation of an old-fashioned living room with glowing fire and two superbly observed cats lolling on the carpet before it
(for a poem by Ted Hughes). In another he paints Dufy-like clouds scudding across a blue sky with a fleet of ships below sketched in crayon, which is very effective. The choice of poems is most eclectic. Apart from the two compilers' own poems, and other family members', there are poems by Wendy Cope, Jack Prelutsky, and, perhaps not surprisingly, song lyrics from the wittiest lyricists the world has known. With Julie Andrews' own introduction to each section, the book has an intimate "family" feel which draws the reader in to feel part of it. The CD is fun too, and as you would expect, the poems are read impeccably with every syllable audible.
