Julian Ashbourn is an established author with a distinguished background and a broad range of interests and experience from computer science and identity management through to geoscience and the natural sciences in general. He has undertaken a good deal of voluntary work with respect to the use of technology in society and has travelled the world in this context, running workshops and presenting at international conferences, often on behalf of government agencies, and spearheading international initiatives to promote the ethical and responsible use of advanced technologies in public applications. In this context, he has authored many seminal papers on technology and associated human factors and introduced various new concepts in this area. Ashbourn occupies a unique position in the scientific world, bringing a fresh, multi-disciplinary approach to challenging subjects, while always offering practical solutions to emerging challenges.
