This is a well-written ghost story in which a feeling of dread permeates the pages. American heiress, Julia Lofting, living in England, leaves her domineering and cruel husband, Magnus, after the unexpected death of their young daughter. She then buys an old Georgian house, which she hopes will pave the way fir a new beginning for her. Unfortunately, not only won't her husband leave her alone, but the house seems to have a mind of its own.

Before she knows it, Julia is living a haunted existence, and her life continues to unravel. As her house of cards comes tumbling down around her, Julia discovers much about the house and her husband. Unfortunately, none of it is good. As the past intrudes upon the present, the feeling of dread and angst mounts as the story barrels down to the grand finale.

I read this book as I though it to be a new novel, as I hadn't seen it before.
When I read it, though, i liked it.
It's not as good as the masterpiece " Blue Rose" or "the Throat"
but it's a really scary novel, and gives a hint of the scaring
qualities of straub's writing, which later come full blast in
"Ghost story", another of my favorites.

If you, like me are a Straub fan, you really ought to read this title!

Not the Peter Straub I remember. A story of a troubled woman who buys a house and learns it's ghostly secrets. I expected subtlety and more underlying tension in the novel, and so found it rather obvious. The end didn't do much for me either - and don't you just hate that!
