Format: MP3 Download
I think that this is Charlie's best record for a while, his harmonica playing is top notch throughout (as usual), there is a good selection of tunes and a rocking really authentic band of Matt Stubbs on guitar, bass player Mike Phillips and the excellent June Core on drums. Right from the opening Eddie Taylor shuffle "Bad Boy" we get a raw rocking blast of Chicago blues, closely followed by more of the same on Shaky Jake's "Roll Your Moneymaker". The sound for a live recording is very good, with a big thick harp sound and an atmospheric guitar sound, with the rhythm section powering everything along, even throughout the 9.41 minutes of Little Walter's "It Ain't Right". I'm not the biggest fan of Charlie's vocals but they seem OK here, particularly on the faster numbers like the boogie "River hip mama" and the funky "Strange land", and my only other criticism of the album is that the overall sound is a bit samey but it is harder to vary things on a live album, although Charlie does play chromatic harmonica on "Feel It in Your Heart". The record finishes with Charlie's trademark minor-key instrumental "Cristo Redentor" with its soulful blow bends and stuttering rhythm.
