Product Description

2013 'Henrietta Records' - 70:28/12
Recorded live at the Juke Joint Chapel, Clarksdale, Mississippi, U.S.A., August 12, 2012.
Charlie Musselwhite - hca/voc, Matt Stubbs - gtr, Mike Phillips - bass, June Core - drums

One of the finest Charlie Musselwhite Bands, ever! Recorded live in a juke joint at the legendary Hwy 49 in Clarksdale, Miss. Great album presenting the blues the way Charlie has been playing for more than five decades: electric, powerful, soulful and decently rocking. The combo's ryhthm backbone consists of June Core, long-time drummer with Little Charlie's Nightcats, and bassist Mike Phillps. Matt Stubbs plays great rhythm and solo guitar, putting new life to Chiacgo style blues classics. This limited edition set contains popular numbers, and Musselwhite favorites like 'Strange Land, 'I'm Going Home', or 'Christo Redemptor'. Great recording and mix.
Comes in a fold-out cardboard sleeve.

Format: MP3 Download
I think that this is Charlie's best record for a while, his harmonica playing is top notch throughout (as usual), there is a good selection of tunes and a rocking really authentic band of Matt Stubbs on guitar, bass player Mike Phillips and the excellent June Core on drums. Right from the opening Eddie Taylor shuffle "Bad Boy" we get a raw rocking blast of Chicago blues, closely followed by more of the same on Shaky Jake's "Roll Your Moneymaker". The sound for a live recording is very good, with a big thick harp sound and an atmospheric guitar sound, with the rhythm section powering everything along, even throughout the 9.41 minutes of Little Walter's "It Ain't Right". I'm not the biggest fan of Charlie's vocals but they seem OK here, particularly on the faster numbers like the boogie "River hip mama" and the funky "Strange land", and my only other criticism of the album is that the overall sound is a bit samey but it is harder to vary things on a live album, although Charlie does play chromatic harmonica on "Feel It in Your Heart". The record finishes with Charlie's trademark minor-key instrumental "Cristo Redentor" with its soulful blow bends and stuttering rhythm.

here's some details on this cd 2 Jun. 2014
By jso - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
with all due respect to the previous reviewers, no one has given many specifics. so here they are: this is charlie's current working band. i've seen them play live. it's a tight quartet, featuring matt stubbs on guitar, mike phillips on bass, june core on drums & charlie on harp. it is not honky-tonk at all, as another reviewer has said, but tough-sounding barroom blues -- very west-side chicago in style, reminding me of a blend of magic slim & the teardrops with the paladins, but featuring harp. excellent playing by all of the musicians. charlie wrote almost half of the songs (good ones!) but the covers are killer, featuring songs by little walter, billy boy arnold, eddie taylor, shaky jake, and others. he closes with his "signature tune", cristo redentor. this cd was recorded in a ratty-looking little roadhouse (assuming the cover photo is the place, but who knows?), in clarksdale MS. the cd jacket says recorded "live", but i hear virtually no crowd noise at all. this cd is highly recommended (i've seen charlie play live over two dozen times, and have about 20 of his records and cds). enjoy!

Great CD. 8 Dec. 2013

Great Album. One of the best blues albums of the year. This is a live CD with a great collection of songs. If you like blues rock you should like this. Matthew Stubbs plays some mean guitar on this. As always Charlie's vocals and harp shine also.

Live Blues 23 April 2014
By Blues Lover - Published on Amazon.com

Nice Live Blues Album from a great harmonica player. 12 songs. 68 minutes 32 seconds. My only complaint is the manufacturer chose to make it a quarter inch larger than the standard CD, so it doesn't fit in my CD storage. The bonehead who made this decision should work for the government in Washington as they always are looking for individuals to make life more difficult and costly for ordinary citizen.

Harmonica moan the blues 9 Dec. 2014
By Stephen E. Perkins - Published on Amazon.com

The harmonica(s) of Charlie Musselwhite bring the blues back around to Little Walter - a full circle of great blues harmonicas. Listen to this great CD and then listen to Charlie on the soundtrack of "Take Me to the River," and then listen to one of Little Walter's best tracks, "Juke," and you will be mesmerized!

Charlie Musselwhite - Better then ever 6 Oct. 2014
By Edward Anady - Published on Amazon.com

Charlie is sounding better than ever. A great mixture of covers and new material on a live album. Musselwhite gives plenty of well deserved space for Matt Stubs on guitar.
