Ridiculous value for a beginner's runaround of some of the great blues singers. Blind Willie McTell,Sony Boy Williamson Robert Johnson,Big Bill Broonzy, Leadbelly, Muddy Waters and much more. A blinder for the price of postage(less than half a pint of beer). Fill your boots while you can.
PS: This sampler has returned. It now costs more beer money but is still superb value.(07/09/2011)
PPS: 11/09/2011. Now available again for price of postage. Still a bargain.
PPPs. 14/10/2011. Price has gone up again. Still worth getting even at hotel cocktail price.

I feel sure the best piece on this superb blues sampler is Bessie Smith's Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out - my oh my that vocal, wow!

But the second best? Is it Robert Johnson or Sonny Boy or Leadbelly or Robert Petway or Leroy Carr or Memphis Minnie or Blind Willie Johnson or...or...or...?

That's what I'm getting at; every track is delicious, making this CD a must have. Go get it! ('Now perhaps it's Tampa Red...or is it Big Bill Broonzy or...')

If you want to know how the blues started then this is a great primer or of you are already into blues then you'll probably really enjoy it. If you want a blues Greatest Hits or you want a first blues album then this probably isn't for you as the songs are quite raw.

this cd compilation which is seliing ridiculously cheaply (£3/$4 max) features many many all time great blues singer songwriters form the late 1920's to 1940's . the 25 track compliation includes the immortal Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, Big BIll Broonzy, Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday and some glorious tracks form unknowns such as Blind Willie McTell, Tampa Red amongst others. blues, roots, slave gang songs, gospel influences, troubador tunes for the music fan in search of the origins of great popular singer songwriters music. it all pretty much started here.

any fan of the blues, roots , simple but soulful songs (reflecting the lot of the african-american experience at the time) will love THIS and if you think the R.Stones,Doors,Janis Joplin,ELvis, Beefheart, Dr.John, even Stevesick Steve were the originals - think again...

Obviously old recordings and you wouldn't expect multi tracking high res production anyway on an album like this. Great artists superb stuff.
