I thought that Dani's previous record `Shine' was very promising, with good playing, production and very interesting song-writing and it was a big improvement over her debut release. Similarly, I think that this new release is a notch up from `Shine' and while it retains many of the same musicians - guitarist Stuart Dixon, bassist Roger Inniss, drummer Jamie Little, Pete Wingfield on keyboards and brother Will on harp on the track "Mississippi Kisses" - this time production is by Jamie Little and we have a horn section of Sid Gauld and Rob Hughes on half of the tracks. I loved the brass on the soul ballad "Falling" (probably my favourite track) and I was impressed to hear that when the band played this song on their recent Paul Jones session it sounded just as good as the version on the CD.
The song writing remains interesting, particularly the song "Crazy World" which comments on African rebel groups use of child soldiers and "The Burning Truth" about last year's riots - both expanding the often clichéd and limited range of blues lyrics. Dani wrote all the songs apart from the covers of Smokey Robinson's "Who's Loving You?" and "Walk Out The front Door" which I associate with Bonnie Raitt. I also really liked the acoustic closer "I Will Be Waiting" and the funky opening track "Don't Go Making Me Cry" - with its Stax-style brass and Albert King-style guitar. However, I don't think that Dani is quite the finished article yet, her voice is still a bit thin at times but if she keeps on improving at this rate she very soon will be.
