Product Description

Review

'A brilliant book' Mary Wesley, Daily Mail 'She wraps up all the golden threads with dazzling wit ... Think Measure for Measure here and a touch of The Tempest there ... Trapido's pen drips with sensuousness and sexuality' The Times 'She is simply dynamite' Philip Hensher, Guardian 'A work of enormous charm, highly entertaining and told with a deft touch, which handles serious matters lightly and treats light ones with proper respect' Michael Dibdin, Independent on Sunday

Product Description

Sparky Christina and her saintly adopted sister Pam couldn't be more different. And when they meet similarly mismatched friends Jago and Peter, the four embark on a dazzling series of pairings and partings, outrageous coincidences and eleventh-hour entrances interrupted one disastrous Halloween when schoolboy revelry turns horribly wrong. Three years on, as Christina analyses the wit, cruelty and crossed genders of Shakespearean comedy, the cast of her own life reunites and the curtain falls on some gloriously unexpected partnerships.

Juggling mixes family romance, with mix-ups in identity and different 'twinnings' of people! It uses carnivalesque and carnival through its presentation of the Halloween scene as well as Joe's passion for cookery. Juggling is used as a metaphor to describe the action within the book; it spins around, all has relation to one another and is representative of the lively protagonist 'Christina'. The narrative is hilarious with Christina as a child siding with Granny P against her father, Joe. Their arguments from pancakes to clothes are hilarious! Read it!

Far too many characters make this book pretty confusing at times, but the action is fast and fascinating. Great fun but unputdownable or you lose the plot!

I'm not sure I am well read enough to get all the WS allusions but I enjoyed it none the less. What a merry go round of characters, it does take an alert mind to keep up. I am glad to see this book is re issued, mine is the older version from a charity shop, picked up as I loved Brother of the More Famous Jack and want to eventually read everything by Barbara Trapido. Christina and Pamela are a unlikely pair of siblings who meet another unlikely pair of young men, Jago and Peter. All connected by the friendships and passions of their parents - a motley crew who live life on the edge from time to time. Colourful, flamboyant attractive people who capture the imagination if not always the sympathy of the reader. I'm on the side of Granny P who was the most touching of them all. Really though it's all about the language and the writing, tip top prose and plot planning. Just a few too many actor in this 'play' perhaps, but generosity is an attractive virtue and Barbara Trapido is nothing if not lavish with her offerings. This kept me enraptured for days.
