Product Description

Product Description
This is a handbook for verbal self-defence. It describes the techniques for protecting and defending oneself effectively in challenging communication situations, and how to shorten hostile interchanges, and to stop provocations. It gives constructive alternatives to being tongue-tied and feeling powerles in the face of aggression, teaches how to shorten angry interchanges and how to gracefully exit an argument, how to give a verbal riposte without getting emotionally too involved, and how to build an invisible mental "shield" that serves to protect our integrity.

From the Publisher
Barbara Berckhan works in private fields of communication consultancy, psychotherapy and speech training. She is author of numerous best-selling self-help books.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as confrontational as it sounds, 28 Dec 2001
By Joanna Lloyd-Rogers (London) - See all my reviews

Despite the titles suggestion that this book is about fighting with words, it's advice centres on how to deal with verbal exchanges in a non-aggressive yet highly satisfying way. Instructing the reader on how to diffuse a verbal attack with the minimum of effort, the author equips us with the ability to win an argument or repel an insult with the satisfying knowledge that we have not stooped to the level of petty name calling. In the best tradition of self help books this promotes a strong sense of self and general wellbeing while offering some very specific and often quite entertaining tips on how to deal with verbal exchanges. A good read for those of us who can let the way others perceive us, rule the way we perceive ourselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aikido verbal, 23 Jun 2006
By C. Tucker "chris141628" (Manchester) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is really about verbal aikido principles rather than judo. There is no attack in aikido, only defence and even then you do only what is necessary to stop your attacker.

If anyone is curious about how martial arts can be used in everyday encounters - without harming the other person then buy this book. It is one of the best books I have ever read - not because it is so well written but because it works. Simple to understand and apply the techniques. Study aikido as well and you'll understand more.

Don't hesitate to buy this book. That is my reccomendation to you.
