DVD Description

Also starring Jenny Seagrove, Louisa Clein, Donald Sinden, Barbara Thorn, Simon Chandler and Simon Ward, Judge John Deed -- Series 5 includes the following episodes -

Hard-Gating
A young black man is stabbed to death in a shared cell - by a known racist - a week before he is due for release. Over-crowding is the Prison Service’s excuse, but the Judge’s questioning reveals that this prison wasn’t up to capacity.

My Daughter, Right or Wrong
A fire-bomb in the animal “hotel” of the science faculty at Sussex University destroys the new multi-million-pound building and kills a scientist. Henry Free, an animal rights movement organiser, is put on trial for murder. He refuses to name anyone else and, armed with information from an informer and some dubious forensic evidence, the police investigation implicates him in a conspiracy to destroy the building.

Lost Youth
At Marc Thompson’s hospital, staff resuscitate a comatose two-year-old boy. Marc tells the child’s parents that it would be in the baby’s best interests if they did not resuscitate him again. The parents believe it is God’s will that he should live and say they’ll fight for him in court.

Silent Killer
Gilly Bridges is rushed into hospital with breathing difficulties. She has neurone disease. Gilly’s husband, Jake, is suffering from stomach cancer and has been forced to retire from the police force. They are convinced that their illnesses have been caused by a mobile phone mast that has been erected above their flats and is used by the police for internal communication. They are suing the local council and Judge John Deed hears the case.

Created, written and produced by GF Newman Directed by Andy Hay, David Kerr and GF Newman Music specially composed by Debbie Wiseman

A BBC Production in association with One-Eyed Dog Originally transmitted: 06/01/06 – 21/01/06

Due to a commitment given by the BBC it is not possible to release episodes 5 and 6 of Series Five.

Fantastic 15 Jan 2010

As a fan of Judge John Deed I obviously think this is fantastic. It's just a pitty we will never see episodes 5 & 6 again on TV or released on DVD.

I purchased this series through The Netherlands' connection and found that the most vital episode was missing! When I wrote to the supplier I was informed that it had been "suppressed". This episode is however of immense value for teaching purposes because it exemplifies as no words ever can the teleological suspension of the ethical: it exemplifies how social justice must have the capacity to transcend the ethical. I would happily pay far more than you are asking for a copy of this episode. It is downright dishonest to sell Series 5 without mentioning this omission of by far the most important of all the Judge John Deed productions.

unfortunate deletion 12 Dec 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Judge John Deed is part of a great tradition of British courtroom television drama that started with Rumpole of the Bailey. Like most of its brethren, Deed features good, solid characters, complex and often touching human stories, first-rate (even great) acting, and astute representation of life in chambers.

John Deed is a most human character, beautifully depicted by Martin Shaw. He is magnificent in the courtroom with his rapier wit and razor-sharp logic but, privately, he is obsessive and compulsive and sometimes foolish -- especially where women are concerned.

As the series progresses to its final seasons it became more and more political, taking on the war in the Middle East, giant corporate polluters, private ownership of companies that are virtually unregulated, and behind much of it is a venal government which places income above safety for the public.

Apparently such controversial subject matter is the reason for the deletion of two episodes from Series Five in this set. It is a loss: for the story itself (which was probably very interesting) but also because, when we start Series Six, several important plot lines having to do with Deed's personal life have changed substantially without our knowing what happened.

Except for that unfortunate omission, this is the type of drama, the execution and content of which we are sorely starved for in the US.
