It shows instead the devastating effect terrorist attacks have on the ordinary person. The story follows an innocent lecturer sitting in a bar who befriends a terrorist and before long is knee-deep in the conspiracy (can anyone say "Troubled Souls" by Garth Ennis?). Dredd of course is Dredd. He is the state and willing to use any means possible to defend the city. That is not to say the story is without some classic Wagner humour, especially when illiterate citizens attack a man wearing a T-Shirt with the word "BUMBER" on it, reminiscent of paediatricians being attacked by baying mobs of morons unable to understand the difference between a doctor and paedophile.
The artwork is past supreme with both Flint and McNeil extraordinarily on form. Mr Brashill also plays a very good game, but the crown really belongs on the head of Henry Flint with his understated depiction of a horrific doomsday.
I know it’s easy to say “post 9/11” in any such review, but this graphic novel was written to stand the test of time, not to pander to current political sensibilities. It is not one for new readers since a history of Dredd is really required to understand the way he thinks and where this story is coming from. Having said that, it might just be the book to get politically minded people to take another look at Judge Dredd since they probably switched off after that travesty of a film in 1995.
