This stand-alone novel is the 2nd in Virgin's short-lived range of Judge Dredd novels, and features Dredd travelling to Brit-Cit on the trail of a blood-thirsty body-hopping creature. While in Brit-Cit Dredd finds himself having to work alongside Detective Judge Armitage, and inevitably sparks fly. The culture clash between the uptight law-machine Dredd and the cynical Armitage makes for a great combination, and Dave Stone provides enough information that the morally bankrupt Brit-Cit comes alive even to those unfamiliar with the 'Armitage' comic strip. The Jokai creature provides a fearsome opponent, and Stone goes to town on some startlingly gruesome gore, but if the novel does have a slight flaw it's that the Jokai is rather lacking in any motivation or convincing explanation of what exactly the creature is. Nevertheless, thanks to Dave Stone's inventive prose this really does feel like a proper novel rather than a comic-strip minus the art, and for readers looking for a dark slice of science fiction horror will find this well worth tracking down. Good stuff.
