Detective Inspector Charlie Priest of the East Pennine force is officially on sick leave, but this brief break from work comes to an abrupt end when Mrs. Marina Norris's chauffeur is found dead from unnatural causes - namely a blast to the head from a Kalashnikov. Her husband, an American tobacco tycoon, is distinctly unfazed. Meanwhile, big-time drug smugglers on the Hull to Rotterdam run demand his attention. I found a Stewart Pawson novel in a library whilst on holiday and really enjoyed it; so much so that as I hadn`t finished it at the end of the holiday I brought it home! I found that the book I had read was the first in the series of Charlie Priest detective novels, so bought the next two on Amazon. They are OK, set in Yorkshire and well written. Charlie is an attractive character and we read quite a lot about his personal life as well as his job. Don`t compare with Peter Robinson`s "Banks" novels, or Mark Billingham`s "Thorne", but if you like those you will probably enjoy these too.

Stuart Pawson's Charlie Priest series are extremely entertaining & great page turners. It's a pity that no television company has not seen fit to make them into a series, in my opinion, they have every ingredient to make an international success - good plots, attractive characters and Yorkshire scenery as a backdrop!

Stuart Pawson had a career as a mining engineer He followed this with a spell working for the probation service, before he became a full-time writer. He lives in the pleasant waterside village of Fairburn in Yorkshire. The author's writing is gritty and to the point added to which he has a likeable sense of humour that he usually incorporates into his books, all of which I have found enjoyable.
DI Charlie Priest is mulling over the fact that as the saying goes a copper is never off duty. Although supposedly on sick leave he has been asked to keep an eye on a well known drugs courier, who uses the Hull-Rotterdam route on a regular basis. He is also concerned for the safety of his girlfriend as she spies on a tobacco company and their sales operation in Africa.
Stuart Pawson's books are to me at least, a cut above the average crime novel. As I said earlier, he has a dry wit that transmits itself to the reader and makes the reading of his books that much more enjoyable an experience.
