5.0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Bathory Album? 23 April 2001
Format:Audio CD
Bathory (essentially a one-man project run by frontman Quorthon on an on-and-off basis) is, for me, one of the most influential metal acts of the 1980's and 1990's.

Early Bathory albums were competent but formulaic, epitomising the bombast and Hammer Horror Satanism of 80's. No doubt exciting at the time but now feeling very dated.

Later though, with his Asatru trilogy, he completely redrew the boundries of the art, moving beyond Satanism to the rich and exciting world of Norse mythology. Black metal has never looked back and the influence of Bathory can be seen today in acts such as Burzum and Ulver.

This album provides a complete overview of the work of Bathory, ranging from the rough and ready Sadist to later material such as Odens Ride and Under The Runes. The progression is clear and, more importantly the music ROCKS!

The songs are carefully chosen and still sound strong and fresh. The only thing missing is a set of explanatory sleevenotes; as seen in the Blood On Ice album, Quorthon is a clever man and always has something interesting to say. Issuing this album without his notes is criminal.

Nevertheless, 5 out of 5. If you have to take 1 Bathory album to the grave take this one.

NB: This album is a lot stronger than Jubeleum II, which seems to have a lot more "filler" on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Bathory Compilation 30 April 2003
Format:Audio CD
This is a brilliant introduction to the World of Bathory for anybody curious about the band. This covers them from their 1st Album (Bathory, 1983) to their 6th (Twilight Of The Gods, 1991) as well as incorporating Demo & unreleased songs. This is a great album as they have managed to get in almost all of my favourite tracks from the Bathory Albums represented. There may be a lack of Inlay Card notes, but at least you get the Lyrics, (which are often missing from many bands greatest hits). My only Bugbear with this album is that there is only one track featured from the amazing "Hammerheart" album, and that the track they put on in a 2 and a half minutes acoustic song! But thats being a little picky when you have the magnificance of such songs as "Blood Fire Death", "A Fine Day To Die", "Enter The Eternal Fire", "Equimanthorn", "Sacrifice" And "Crawl To Your Cross" to name but a few. The songs vary from early speedy black metal to massive heavy metal epics. All utterly brilliant, do yourself a favour and buy this album, you won't regret it!
