Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

This disc of Rossini Arias by the rising young Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez is a winner. He has a light lyric tenor of quality, stunning coloratura technique, and a real feeling for the Rossini style. He shines in these bravura arias, scattering high Cs and Ds with abandon. There aren't many tenors these days who can fearlessly negotiate the perils of arias like "Cessa di più resistere" from The Barber of Seville with such aplomb. Nor are there many who can capture both the pathos and the fevered intensity of "Oh fiamma souave" from La donna del lago. Even those who might wish for a warmer, sweeter sound in the bel canto repertory than Flòrez's brighter, more brilliant tones should welcome this auspicious solo debut. He's helped by the sure hand of Riccardo Chailly at the helm, ensuring stylistically sympathetic performances. --Dan Davis

5.0 out of 5 stars STUNNING, ARISTOCRATIC 26 April 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
A whole hour of such excelence is a rare thing from a tenor these days. His phrasing and coloratura skills come across so effortlessly as to be almost too much of a good thing at one sitting. Anyone seeking a companionn disc should go for his partnership with Karasova on her disc of Rossini arias and duets, especially that from Cenerentola, where he exhibits a flawless lyric technique, which he again displayed in the recent Sonnambula at Covent Garden

My only hope is that he does not follow those of his predecessors into the heavier roles which ruined so many fine lyric voices. More of him please. I cannot wait for his complete Sonnambula.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing voice, great recording. 17 Dec 2006
By Ian
Format:Audio CD
There's not a lot to add to the other reviews and all I can do is endorse the very positive comments of my peers.

This CD is all about the lyrical quality of Juan Diego's voice and Rossini is a great vehicle through which to demonstrate it.

Tenor singing at it's very, very best - you won't hear anything to top this at the moment.

I agree with others who suggest that the addition of a duet may have broken the recital up a little but no matter - buy with confidence, it's great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Radiant top, but where is the warmth? 3 Jun 2011
Format:Audio CD
Florez is an outstanding tenor in this repertoire - Rossini and Donizetti. He has the agility and the top notes. His voice is like a sharp sword, but also a bit metallic like a sword. This is not necessarily something negative, but his voice has a slight metallic sound. I miss a bit warmth. When he is singing piano/pianissimo you can feel that the warmth is there, but on this album he mostly moves between mezzoforte and forte. It tends to be a bit dull despite the fast agility and radiant top notes.
He is absolutely at his best in the aria from La Cenerentola where he adds character. I guess that the fact that he has done this part on stage many times is a part of the explanation.
Chailly and the Milano orchestra is good. The wind players are EXTREMELY good. But.... in my opinion Chailly is painting with a bit to broad brush sometimes. The conducting lacks a bit of "esprit".
