Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Jimmy Smith's Very Best Of JS: B-3 is a two-for-one CD package showcasing Smith's work for Verve and affiliated labels between 1962 and 2000. That is some span but compilers Dan Baxter and Nathan Graves have managed to be both representative and imaginative in their 28 choices. A curmudgeon might point out that 10 selections also appear on 1995's Best of the Verve Years but the classic status of (among others) "Walk On The Wild Side", "Hobo Flats", "Organ Grinder's Swing" and "The Cat" made some such duplication inevitable. The inclusion of "Eight Counts For Rita" and "Give Up The Booty" from little known Mercury albums cut in the late 1970s is commendably enterprising, as is the provision of an unissued alternative take of the title track from Smith's most recent album Dot Com Blues. No less satisfying are "What I'd Say", "The Carpetbaggers" (magnificent Lalo Schifrin arrangement) and the spine-tingling "Hoochie Coochie Man"; others will doubtless cite their own favourites, which is as it should be. This handsome collection confirms the view of Smith as a great jazzman who just happens to play the organ, testifying to his subtlety and taste as much as to his blues-drenched power and exhilarating earthiness. --Richard Palmer

This review is from: Js:B-3 The Very Best Of (Audio CD)
A wonderful summation of Jimmy's career - his big band collaborations with Lalo Schifrin in the 50's & 60's, his intense 70's funk efforts, right up to the title track from 2000's dot.com blues album - it's all here.
For all fans of the undisputed king of the Hammond B3 organ, this is a must have compilation.
