Very systematic approach, but often heavy and murky
on 12 March 2000
I look forward to reading other books about Buddhism! This is not a good book for someone just beginning to read about Buddhism. It is extremely systematic, but the writing is too often heavy and murky, with some concepts mentioned, without a helpful explanation of the concept. The author divides everything into parts: "This is in 4 parts, that is in 8 parts" etc. etc. Over 600 pages of that style wore me down, in all honesty. Some nice passages, but I would have preferred more explanation of some concepts, and a more inspiring writing style. This reads like an American Army training manual. Not a good book to start with.
