Product Description

CD Description

Conceived as an intimate revue for four people, Joyce Grenfell Requests the Pleasure highlighted the talents of Joyce Grenfell and a trio of dancers known as Three's Company. This 1954 revue was a hit in the West End and ran for 276 performances before transferring to Broadway.

It was the last time that Joyce Grenfell would appear in a revue, for after this her career was as a solo performer. She was to become a British institution, a star who retained an amateur persona throughout her career whose characters and wit were always gentle and spot on but never cruel.

First time on CD this re-mastered cast recording features Joyce singing from the show 'Three Brothers', 'Ordinary Morning' and traditional American folk songs taught by her American-born mother ('Songs My Mother Taught Me'). Bonus tracks include Joyce's "Du Maurier" and "The End of The News" from the 1945 revue Sigh No More; her duets with Norman Wisdom "I Don't 'Arf Love You", "Narcissus" and the Joyce Grenfell classic "I'm Going To See You Today". We end the CD with six songs by Beatrice Lillie to illustrate her unique appeal.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting period piece 22 Dec 2008
Format:Audio CD
If you are looking for Joyce Grenfell's trademark monologues of mimicry, this is not the CD for you, though there are one or two items of this type. It is a remastered recording of an early show, where the emphasis is on the music. The sound quality is extremely high, and we often forget what a beautiful singing voice she had. Some of the items are entirely serious, like her songs from the American South; where there is a comic element, at this distance in time we often can't see the point.

There are several bonus tracks added, mostly by Beatrice Lilley. So if you are interested in the period, this is an important item for your collection; but for vintage Grenfell you should look elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great nostalgic trip 19 Jan 2011

How good, for those of us of a certain age, to be able to hear Ms. Joyce Grenfell again, also the added delight of Ms. Bea Lillie. Two great British Artists. I was never a fan of Norman Wisdom so could have down without those tracks.

Considering a lot of the material is about 60yrs old, it is so funny.
I particularly like tracks 13&15. I keep playing them to give me a boost.
