Or selected parts of it. It throws light on those characteristic Goudge elements of intensely visual descriptions of beauty (she trained as an artist) her religion,(her father became Regius Professor of Theology at Oxford) suffering, and the supernatural. Her mother, to whose care she gave a lot of her life, lived in constant pain and had Esp. There are ghosts. Here are the real backgrounds of all her novels, from a woman who admits that places often meant more to her than people. Guernsey, Wells, Devon, Oxfordshire. Yet being the highly selective person she was she talks about her faith and the people, and dogs(!) in her family whom she loved, but not ANYTHING about, for example her own romantic life..or the details of a possible nervous breakdown. However, there is the surprising news that these novels- often accused of being sacharine and too cosy,- were sometimes created at great cost against a background of grief, despair and darkness.
