5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning: moving, funny and tragic. A classic, 20 May 2001
By A Customer
Apart from the story-telling where four Chinese-American mothers recount their tragic lives in China, this story focuses on the relationships between mothers and daughters. It is a film that recounts the harsh coinditions under which Chinese women were (are??) born and the struggles of four women who fled their demons to move to America in the hope of giving their children everyhting they were denied. It is at once poignant, humorous, sad, and above all relevant, balancing the obviously heart-rending plot with the need to avoid descending into melodrama. Having viewed it 8 years after its release, and having read the book, it left me deeply moved, with the feeling that the film had more than done justice to the original storye. This is a rare movie that entertains from start to finish, and brilliantly covers the full spectrum of human emotions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joy Luck Club, 13 Jun 2003
A beautifully crafted story. I first saw it about 10 years ago and when I saw it again this year (2003) I loved it just as much. The characters are all very different each with their own charms and failings. This film manges to display the fragility of human nature. It is a realisation that we all have the same basic need - to be loved and accepted for what we are. It shows emotion without being too sentimental. The background music is great - wish I could buy a CD of it. Don't miss this film. Unforgettable!

5.0 out of 5 stars A look at the film, from the view of a JLC book fan!, 10 April 2002
The Joy Luck Club was a movie I ordered after loving the book for a time. I sat down to watch it in great anticipation, and sure, it added, chopped and changed bits from the book, but the film, though never as good as the book, is a gripping, beautiful movie. The characters were exactly like I imagined them (Especially Waverly and Lindo) and I liked how the movie showed the tales in a different way. Like the book, parts of the movie moved me to tears, and I loved each character. See this movie, especially if you are a fan of the book, you will not be dissapointed!
