Jamie Geller, the "Jewish Rachael Ray" and founder of the Kosher Media Network, is the author of several successful cookbooks, magazines, a popular website, and a TV show. In the beginning, though, she was raised on takeout and it wasn't until her mid-twenties that she gravitated to Jewish observance. The "Bride Who Knew Nothing" was at first clueless about cooking; joining her husband's family meant celebrating more than 100 traditional holiday meals annually for the immediate and extended family. Thankfully, Jamie's experiences learning to cook kosher have benefitted the rest of us with the newest Joy of Kosher cookbook; you'll find dependable, delicious recipes that can be dressed up or down for the occasion, many using pantry staples that you already have on hand.

As soon as I got my copy, I put a sticky flag on any recipe that looked interesting; my book soon looked like a colorful porcupine! I ended up trying Uputzi's Vegetarian Chopped "Liver" Pâté, Butternut Squash Mac `n' Cheese, Blue Cheese, Pear, and Arugula Pizza, Country Spinach, Tomato and White Bean Soup, Hearty Mushrooms with Herbs and Wine (phyllo cup variation), Cold Soba Noodles with Sweet Sesame Tofu, Gooey Chocolate Cherry Cake, Cran-Rosemary Challah and Sun-Dried Tomato, Garlic, and Herb Braided Challah.

The book opens with a compact equipment and ingredients list and a brief overview of "the kosher thing" (no pork or shellfish, no mixing meat and milk in the same meal, and processed foods require rabbinic certification). Recipes are clearly labeled with kosher status (meat, dairy, or pareve), prep time, cook time, and number of servings.

Joy of Kosher-Fresh Fast Family Recipes 15 Oct 2013
By Gloria Kobrin - Published on
Format: Hardcover
Joy of Kosher: Fast, Fresh Family RecipesWhenever I open a new cookbook or really any book, I like to read about the author. The author's background gives me a window into where she/he has come from and what might have influenced their writing. Reading the intro of Jamie Geller's newest book: JOY of KOSHER-FAST, FRESH FAMILY RECIPES was certainly elucidating. Jamie has often referred to herself as "the bride who knew nothing". She unabashedly tells the reader, that she grew up on take out, really doesn't like to cook and learned how to be kosher somewhere in her mid twenties.
Jamie Geller has presented us with a beautiful collection of recipes that are perfect for family dinners and company too. Each recipe is offered with an option for family eating and a way to "dress it up" for company. This cookbook is all inclusive. From Challah dough and all the many variations you can make from it, to hors d'oeuvres, entrees, vegetables, salads and desserts- Jamie has it all covered. She gives you holiday recommendations, ways to combine her recipes to make a meal, lists of staples and equipment to keep on hand and several glossaries. My favorite is the "Hebrew, Yiddish, Yinglish" glossary. There is also a Passover substitution list. In addition, Jamie offers wine pairing with each meal. One of the wines she mentions is "W" by Weinstock-a dry white wine that I order by the case. It's very reasonably priced so it's great for cooking and drinking as well.
There are many beautiful photographs in this new book but none more beautiful than the ones of Jamie's family that are interspersed throughout. It is clear that Jamie Geller has transformed her dislike of cooking into a calling to demonstrate that you don't have to spend all day in the kitchen to cook in a healthy and creative way for your family. To quote Jamie: " That's because food is an expression of love." Jamie's newest book (like her previous ones) should become a treasured new friend in your kitchen.

I absolutely LOVE this cookbook! I really like that each recipe has an option to either dress it up or dress it down, so you can reuse favorite recipes for everyday or dress them up for special occasions. The pictures are gorgeous and instructions are easy to follow. Jamie's personal stories throughout are hilarious and so relatable. This cookbook is a must have!

You want this cookbook!! 11 Nov 2013
By Sarah Klinkowitz - Published on
Format: Hardcover
Jamie Geller's cookbooks speak to everyone in different ways, but there is a common thread that any home cook can appreciate. Any home cook is cooking and for family and friends - they need recipes that they can relate to, can make simple or fancy, and best of all that are not complicated. It is for these reasons I would recommend purchasing this cookbook.

My new favorite recipe book! 2 Dec 2013
By Loren P - Published on
Format: Hardcover
I am a huge fan of Jamie Geller as I relate to her as a Mom and a home chef. I too went from the bride who knew nothing to becoming an accomplished home chef, thanks to recipe books like this one. As soon as I received this book, my kids and I (my sous chefs) poured over the pages deciding on what to make. We LOVED the pictures. My book was covered in sticky notes from recipes they wanted me to try. Everything I have tried so far has been excellent. I don't have time to stand all day and cook. I just want tasty food that is not complicated to make. This book delivers just that... Try the fish taco's.... One of our favorite recipes. My family highly recommends this book.
