Spandau Ballet - Once More

Biography

To Cut A Long Story Short

The first time that most Londoners heard the words Spandau Ballet was on the London Weekend Television arts programme Twentieth Century Box, in May 1980. Presented by Danny Baker, Twentieth Century Box was the place you went to for your youth culture fix.

And Baker’s programme was devoted to a new cult, The Cult With No Name, a bunch of soul boys and girls, disaffected art… Read more in Amazon's Spandau Ballet Store

At first I thought something was wrong with my stereo, the trebles are so shrill that all symbols, high hat and lead guitar merge into a painfull racket. The base and drums don't exist! There is an improvement with the three singles after Toys and disc 2 sounds great??! The live tracks are simply brilliant! but why have they left Musclebound 12" off? It's the best version in my opinion and sorely missing for this so called completest/definetive release. Also where's the dvd? Surely they could have found footage, videos, t.o.t.p's, live, etc...Journeys to Glory and Diamond are great favourites of mine as the band sold out very quickly with the next four slush ridden soulpoprock albums!Listening to Marvin is NOT the sound of my soul! Unfortunately Duran Duran have pipped them at the post again with their remasters which are superb! PLEASE RECALL AND REMASTER THIS CD PROPERLY AS IT MUST BE A MISTAKE!!!!!!

This has to be the WORST remastered CD I have ever bought. From the first song until the last, the songs sounded like it came from an old transistor radio.
A check at the credits showed that it was remastered at Abbey Road Studios - the same studio that remastered the Beatles Box Set, albeit a different engineer. It is a bewilderment how such a poor quality product could even escape from the studios and be allowed to the released to the fans.

The Band should also be ashamed of themselves for allowing this awful product to be sold to their ardent fans. If they had any honour left in them, they should apologise to their fans, remaster the CD again and offer replace those that have been sold. At least when New Order botched their remastered CDs, no thanks to Rhino, they did own up and Rhino did replace the defect CDs. Will EMI do the same?

There is often a lot of controversy about views regarding remastering of CD releases and claims about sound quality, where to some ears they sound fine and to others they have been messed up. There are times when I can't hear what all the fuss is about. However... for this CD there no such confusion. As is clear from other reviews, this is a very poor quality 'remastering' job where the person in charge of the process of adjusting the music for this release has succumbed to the awful trend of recent years to make it as LOUD as possible to the detriment of the overall dynamics of the sound. At least on the main album disc. It is way too loud and over-compressed and it is actually painful to listen to for any length of time. I gave up listening and decided to return my copy for a refund. If you are just buying this for the extra tracks fair enough, I can understand that but my advice would be to hang on to your original copy of the CD or seek it out second hand in preference to this effort. The shoddiness goes to the packaging too with at least one typo, giving a flavour for how little quality control has been involved with this release from start to finish. EMI records, wake-up and listen to your the customers who actually still pay money and buy these shiny little discs instead of just seeking them out to download for free or they will give up on it all!

Horrible Sound Quality
I love this album and have it on CD from the 80s. This remastered one is truly awful though. Really tinny sound and it fades in and out like a cheap am radio. Read more

Not being a great album to begin with, the shoddy remastering makes this one virtually unlistenable. Avoid!
