An utterly wonderful translation of an utterly wonderful book. Tripitaka, Pigsy, Sandy and, of course, Monkey, live and breathe in these 100 chapters (the first time the entire book has appeared in English). Yu admits that where the dialogue is concerned he's taken his lead from the (deservedly acclaimed but heavily-abridged) Waley translation of the 1950s, but that is no bad thing, for Yu's translation of the dialogue sparkles with humour, character and no small amount of attitude. It's often hard to believe that this novel originated in 16th century China: the voices and behaviour of its protagonists seem so utterly modern.

I can't recommend this translation highly enough: I've read it four times now and every time it -both the text and the extensive notes- seem to offer fresh delights.
