Product Description

Tabu Records defined the sound of young America throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, with hugely successful acts like Brainstorm, The S.O.S. Band, Alexander O Neal and Cherrelle, whilst nurturing the powerhouse production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis one of the most successful production teams of the last 30 years. A comprehensive deluxe re-issue campaign will roll throughout 2013 and into 2014.

The label's re-launch takes in Brainstorm's second album, 'Journey Into The Light', which includes the singles "Lovin Just You" and "Wake Up And Be Somebody".

This expanded album is packaged in a sumptuous case-bound book, containing newly authored liner notes and lyrics, along with additional remixes and alternate versions, of singles originally released from the album.

I have a copy of this album on vinyl and thought I'd get a cd copy as well. Being a big 'Brainstorm' fan, I have both the two albums, I believe they have only ever produced. 'Journey to the Light' is the better of two. Funk,Soul at it's best. Great vocals by Belita Woods with hard bass lines from Deon Estus.
Simply, Pure Class.

One of the Best All time R & B CD's Ever, Period! 8 Jun 2003
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
If I need one thousand words to describe something as beautiful as this cd then, it can't be done! I'll be brief, "Just listen with an open heart and an open mind!" Brainstrom will do the rest! The music is fantastic and the vocals are truly excellent! Give yourself a wonderful journey!
Take Care, Enjoy & Peace!

A true soul gem. I introduce to all that I can.. 13 Jun 2007
By Walter Patrick - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This album was not a big seller when it was released. I understand that it was because it was lacking in the dance tracks that was popular in the 1977/78 period it was introduced to.

That's no reason not to check it out now.

For fans of polished and well orchestrated soul records in the style and (trust me) the caliber of Earth Wind and Fire at their peak, this is your album.

Brainstorm were, intentionally, in the making of this album shooting for the EW&F crown and it shows...every song is polished, full and elaborate.

The lead singer Berlita Woods sounds a lot like Mary J. Blige (or vice versa), the bass player is Deon Estus and the backing band is extra tight and soulful. The song writing is second to none.

I would LOVE to hear Mary J remake "If you ever need to smile" the same way she rocked "I'm going down".

Scoop it up fa sho!

Nasty, Funky , Soul-Drenched Music ! 7 Aug 2003
By Kirk Abernathy - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I can't believe this band wasn't bigger and better known than they were. They had fantastic musicianship, great vocals and some positive messages in the music. Check out the bass playing (even on the slow tunes)-I don't know who it was, but he was a bad mutha! If you like your funk with a little jazz and some soulful vocals don't hesitate to buy this. You won't be disappointed!

A Brilliant Journey 3 Oct 2013
By Alex Litvak - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Brainstorm’s sophomore album, “Journey To The Light” was released in 1978 on Tabu Records label as the Disco craze was in full swing. Having scored a major across the board hit “Lovin’ You Is Really My Game” off their debut album “Stormin’”, Brainstorm had the difficult task of following up such a solid debut. “Journey To The Light” more then delivers. Musically, it is far richer and more sophisticated then “Stormin’”. If “Stormin’” was more of a Dance/Funk album, “Journey To The Light” can not be pigeonholed into any category. This set is a highly sophisticated slice of Jazzy Classy R&B. And this is what might have sunk this brilliant album. Fans who were expecting more breezy Disco like “Lovin’ You Is Really My Game” would find themselves stunned to listen to this album. If any one actually bough it. And most people did not. The album made a very minimal impact, if any. And that is a shame. Killer jazzy R&B grooves like “We’re On Our Way Home”, “Every Time I See You I Go Wild”, “Positive Thinking” and the title track have an almost ethereal feel to them. These are in no way Dance songs but they sure will sound good when the volume is cranked up. The aforementioned tracks sound better and better with repeated listens and that is the theme of the entire album. It warrants repeated listening and should be appreciated as one brilliant whole as opposed to the sum of its parts like “Stormin’”.

BRAINSTORM members were superb musicians and BRAINSTORM was very much a self contained band. Listen to the albums mid tempo songs. “If Ever You Need To Cry” will give you chills with Belita Woods’ stunning vocals and the band’s musicianship skills. “Loving Just You” is another mid tempo groove, while “Brand New Day” has that uplifting positive quality to it that will make you smile and want to move at the same time.

It is a shame that this album did not produce any radio hits. Had Tabu Records been able to further promote “Journey To The Light”, perhaps the album would have received the support and attention it deserved. Huge heartfelt thanks must be given to Tabu Records for re-mastering this long out of print jewel. This re-master has amazing sound and the packaging is simply gorgeous, the liner notes are fascinating and informative and there are 3 Bonus tracks here. One of these Bonus tracks being “The Visitor”, a jazzy instrumental gem that did not initially appear on the original album. “We’re On Our Way Home” is available here in its rare 12” Version. “Loving Just You” is also available in its Single Version. The album’s stunning original album cover art front and back is preserved as well. A must have for any Disco/R&B lover and collector.
