Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Although they hail from Long Beach, California, Ugly Duckling and their debut Journey to Anywhere couldn't be further afield philosophically from Snoop Dogg, the MC who put their hometown on the hip-hop map. With Andy Cooper and Dizzy Dustin kicking simple yet engaging rhymes and DJ Young Einstein hauling out jazzy midtempo beats apparently dusted off from the late 1980s and early 1990s, Ugly Duckling are as defiantly throwback as the gold chains they occasionally rock. Add a goofy sense of humour to the mix and the nonsensical anti-jiggy flavour of "A Little Samba" starts to make absolute sense. After single-handedly attempting to resurrect the usage of the word "fresh" in hip-hop circles on their debut EP, Fresh Mode, this entertaining long-player picks up where they left off, staying true to the intangible essence of hip-hop while remembering to have fun. Now that's F-R-E-S-H. --Del F Cowie

Much against todays modern onset of 'gangster rap', Ugly Duckling bring a new breath of truly old-school 'fresh' hip hop. No doubt Andy Cooper, Dizzy Dustin and Young Einstein have revived the true hip-hop industry, following on from Beastie Boys, De La Souls and People Under the Stairs 80's days, with extreme amounts of talents. 'I did it Like this', with brilliant Samples from Einstein, A Little Samba, which talks about modern day sellouts. This group is truly under rated, not known by many, which perhaps is a good thing. But buy this album and no doubt your view of hip hop will change forever. Oh yeh, listen out for some fresh lines such as, And I wrote a little rap about my fat cat but now im the cat with the phat rap'- genius

I'd just seen UGLY DUCKLING make a rare public appearance at a sugar bear night in blackpool, and they blew me away with their stage show, so much that I had to purchase this album.
I DID IT LIKE THIS is a real pleaser containing a sample of Beastie Boys "Paul Revere" and has a catchy hook to get your head bobbing. THE PIKE is a funky little number, and I can't really find fault with any of the tracks on the album - just like their counterparts Jurassic 5 they have quality control.
In a nutshell, the album combines rap, funk, jazz, lazy beats and summerey melodies that are essential for chilling to on the beach, or lazing in your crib. If you like De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Jurassic 5 and the ilk, but you want your beats fresher and funkier on an underground tip then purchase this album - it is essential, UGLY DUCKLING are one of the most underrated groups around. Ignorance is no excuse - go buy, you will not be disappointed.
