Book Description

10 Aug 2007 1858943671 978-1858943671 illustrated edition
In the tradition of the great journeys taken by such photographers as Fox Talbot, Fenton and Bourne, Harry Cory Wright set out, in March 2006, on a quest to capture the variety of natural landscapes that make up the British Isles using a large-format plate camera. Beginning in the fragile, frozen beauty of Unst in Shetland at the spring equinox, he travelled down through the Western Isles and mainland Scotland to Northumberland and further south through England and Wales. This stunning book documents Cory Wright's remarkable journey. Each photograph is infused with the unique spirit of its location - from vast, wild mountain ranges to verdant, dewy forests at sunrise, from windswept beaches in winter to fields bathed in late summer, early evening sun.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful collection of inspirational images 14 Nov 2008
Format:Hardcover
The photographs in this book are stunning and the book is presented in a format which is durable and easily handled yet displays the images well. Harry Cory Wright has obviously gone to extraordinary lengths to capture down to earth images of amazing clarity from around the UK and it shows. This book is a permanent feature on our coffee table and everyone in the house regularly enjoys thumbing through it. Highly recommended!

Yes definitely not Gursky and thankfully not Joe Cornish and his over the top melodrama. More like the North American large format landscape tradition, I'm thinking Joel Sternfeld or a rural Stephen Shore.

Subtle images and a nice change from the usual over the top and unsubtle pretty landscape photography that seems to dominate the field.

My only quibble is the lack of urban infringement in the images and I'd like a greater recognition of the damage we are doing to our environment but apart from that, a fine book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made me fall in love with Britain again 16 Sep 2011

Some really beautiful images that really capture the imagination, they really do take you on a journey - from page to eye to mind to there! A previous reviewer compared this work to Joe Cornish and Andreas Gursky - I don't think he has ever seen anything by Gursky as this is nothing like any of his work. Joe Cornish does nice pictures but again not like Harry Cory Wright - Harry's photographs have atmosphere and life as apposed to other generic 'nice' pictures that you'd find at home on stock photography websites. This book is a must for anyone wanting a nice relaxing journey round Britain, all from the comfort of your armchair!
