This is a story of incredible courage, loyalty and love between people and animals. A wonderful change from the violent movies of today. This movie provided me with the opportunity to escape the cold reality of life today. Hopefully movie directors will produce more of this type of movie in the future, to give hope to so many who suffer the hardships in todays modern lifestyles.

Lovely movie, beautifully shot. Story of a father and daughter separated during the great depression and ultimately reunited each other. Meredith Salenger is excellent in a role that goes against the usual Disney cuteness. Check out John Cusack in an early turn and probably his first kissing scene.
This would make a great Christmas gift, and probably for any other occasion too. In my opinion, one of Disney's all time best adventure movies.

A surprising film given that it came from Walt Disney Productions. It focuses on one of the least edifying periods of U.S., 20th Century
history ie., the 1930s depression and the poverty, deprivation, injustice and intolerance that occurred. Whilst it partially
sanitizes the experiences of Natty Gann and her father, there is enough violence and cruelty to suggest the gross inhumanity of that period as experienced by much of the working class living without powerful and effective trades unions and a unifying political ideology. Stars of the film are of course the "wolf" and Meredith Salenger (whatever happened to her?). Well worth seeing..

I'm in the US and all we got was a lousy full screen release of this film. So I went with region 2.

I had some minor difficulty with the DVD. I used a piece of software to make a region free version (which acts as a back up). The menus didn't work 100% on my player with the backup but I was able to watch the film. Like another film I did this process with the picture isn't too sharp at times. But I've seen the effect worse with some region 1 DVDs. So it is certainly watchable this way. The picture quality is sub-par but probably better than a VHS or region 1 disc. Hopefully the film will get a proper release over here, perhaps on Blu Ray. You hear that Disney? You'll sell at least 1 Blu Ray region 1 of this film. I'm sure there are others. Just do a barebones BD and stick it in the stores. Please. Or...do the right thing and do a 2-disc release...

As for the film, it's a 3.5-star overall in my eyes. I'm not about to compare it with the best adventure films ever done. I truly love the film, Cusack is hardly in it but that young actress (Salenger) and the wolf dog are both excellent and carry the film from beginning to end. It's hard to find good old fashioned adventure films anymore. Everything has to be full of CGI and whatnot. With the recent return of Disney 2D animation (as of 2009) I'm hoping the studio will take another look at these old films and do something worthwhile for the genre again.

Conclusion: if you like the film and have a region free player or can do a backup like I did that removes all that region mumbo-jumbo then this is a worthy purchase to get it in widescreen.

For some reason that will forever remain a mystery, Disney released The Journey of Natty Gann in the United States Region One as one of the worst pan and scan DVD transfers I've ever owned. It was heartbreaking to see what may have been the best Disney movies to come out of the 80's be treated so appallingly.

Adding more to the mystery was the fact that the Region 2 UK disc was released in anamorphic widescreen. And make no mistake about it, the difference is amazing. Comparing the two versions, a full forty percent of the picture is missing from the U.S. edition, not to mention that it is blurry and grainy beyond release.

Several years ago it may have been problematic to play this disc in the U.S. because it is Region 2 and PAL format. But I finally took the chance and was able to overcome those restrictions to make the disc playable. It was worth every penny and I would have spent double to own this edition.

Still, the question remains is why Disney continues to ignore this wonderful film which is not only the story about a girl and her wolf, but is an almost perfect essay of life during the depression. Frankly, if they have such little regard for it, Disney should turn the film over to Twilight Time (It has a great score by James Horner) or Criterion. I'm sure there are many people in the U.S. who would love to see this film given the respect it deserves.
