Product Description

When flight nurse Kim Journey was eleven, her five-year-old sister Jennifer disappeared.

Kim was supposed to be watching her.

Plagued with guilt for many years, Kim believes in her heart Jenny is still alive. She takes traveling assignments and tacks posters all over the country with computer-generated photos of what Jenny would look like now.

On a Life Flight call to a cardiac emergency, Kim discovers something horrifying, something grave and sinister and impossible to ignore. As the only living witness to this atrocity, she feels compelled to launch an investigation.

With no help from the police, and her nursing license in jeopardy, Kim must strike out on her own in an effort to discover what really happened.

But the truth seems to be elusive in the small town of Hallows Cove, Florida, and Kim soon finds herself tumbling headfirst into a black maze of deceit, betrayal, and murder.

Will these bizarre and brutal crimes in the deep south finally lead Kim to her long lost sister?

Fans of James Patterson and J.A. Konrath will love the suspense, drama, and sheer terror of this lightning-paced tightrope walk by newcomer S.J. Harris.

Fast, well written, absorbing plot and difficult to put down! Hopefully there is a sequel as I'm curious as to how the journey ends...

Excellent debut thriller 13 Feb 2011
By Robert B. Thompson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
S.J. Harris gets off to an excellent start with this début thriller, which shows little of the roughness typical of first books. Plotting, setting, characterization, and dialog are all competently done, although I would like to have seen a bit more development of several of the supporting characters. The ending is a bit over-the-top, but of course that's not unusual for a thriller.

The protagonist, Kim Journey, is both likeable and credible. She's pursuing a career as helicopter flight nurse. At age 11, Kim was babysitting her 5-year-old sister, who disappeared, never to be found. After 17 years, everyone else has long ago given up hope, but Kim continues a single-minded search for her sister. Rather than work at one hospital, Kim does three-month contracts at hospitals all over the country to widen the scope of her ongoing search.

A less-skilled author might have turned Kim into a one-dimensional character, but Harris deftly fleshes out her character. Kim, for example, is a vegetarian who can't resist the occasional cheeseburger or fried chicken. Without stinting her search for her sister, Kim still manages to develop at least one romantic interest that shows some serious potential.

I rated this book four stars rather than five mainly because I think it should have been longer. In traditional publishing, first novels are often short because the publisher enforces severe page-count constraints to keep the cost and risk down. For e-books, higher page-counts impose no additional costs, and I think Harris should have taken advantage of that fact to fill out the story a bit more, and particularly to develop her supporting characters.

Still, that's only a minor nit. Overall, this book is definitely worth the read, and I'm looking forward to later titles in the series.

Into the Darkness We Go! 22 Feb 2011
By J. Hudock - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I generally don't read a lot of thrillers unless they come highly recommended by a friend, so I had no idea what to expect from Journey Into Darkness.

The fast-pace of the first chapter drove me right into the mind and personality of flight nurse, Kim Journey, who has been carrying the weight of guilt from her five-year-old sister's disappearance around for over sixteen years. That's why Kim loves her job as a flight nurse--it allows her to travel and hang up posters of what her sister Jenny might look like today.

Drawn into a bizarre mystery after discovering a human finger in a can of dog food at the scene of a rescue she and her team are called to, Kim can't resist the call to be a heroine. If she can find out who that finger with the sparkly purple nail polish belongs to, it might help ease some of the suffering she's felt over the years since her little sister was nabbed.

Following Kim along through the mystery was fun. The pacing remained steady from beginning to end. The one thing that sort of got me was how neatly everything wraps up in the end. I also figured out pretty early on who the killer was, so I wasn't surprised when it all started to pull together. There were occasional scenes where I found myself wondering why the author spent so much time focusing on things that seemed to have very little to do with the overall plot, but she surprised me by finding a way to work them all in before the end.

Kim Journey was definitely a fun protagonist. I would definitely read another Kim Journey book, so here's hoping Harris has plans for sequels.

Overall, I give Journey into Darkness 4 out of 5 stars, mostly because it isn't a genre that I read on a regular basis. The plot flowed well. The writing was relatively clean. The characters were believable. I definitely recommend this for thriller and mystery fans

Action Packed Thriller!!!!! 1 Mar 2011
By B.H. Perkins - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
To get an idea of what this story is about, please read the Product Description above. It is excellent! This is an action packed thriller. Fast paced from beginning to end. And very well written. Once you start, it's hard to put it down.

The protagonist, Kim Journey completely endeared herself to me. Although sometimes vulnerable, she has extreme courage. She's so brave, yet believable. A person you would surely like in real life.

If you like thrillers, you won't be disappointed with this book. Like me, you'll be hoping for a sequel!
