4.0 out of 5 stars The Journey's Afro-Latin Compositions Offer a Rhythmic Feast 10 July 1998
By Rick Incorvati (raincorv@email.unc.edu) - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Though some of Perez's solos on this CD bear similarity to his devious playing on Panamonk, this collection is quite different. The Journey couples Perez's improvisation skills with his talents as a composer/arranger for a mid-sized ensemble. The results are delightful. In addition to Perez's heavily-rhythmic playing, the album boasts some really fine solos by David Sanchez. And while the appeal of this album may not be as instantaneous as much of the work on Panamonk, for me The Journey weathers better. It's a rare combination of beauty and intensity.

Danilo Perez has put together an album with depth and daring that makes him one of the most promising jazz musicians of his time. His compositions are strong in originality and execution. He is certainly the one to watch as the Marsalis crowd seems stuck in the past.
5.0 out of 5 stars A Truly Inspiring And Evocative Experience! 30 April 2014
By RH - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Now that Danilo Perez had become an international star on the jazz scene and
the Latin jazz circuit after being signed to RCA Records in 1992, he had released
his second ambitious CD that is described as a jazz suite about Panama’s history
from slavery to bright aftermath following emancipation in that country—and what
lies ahead. Released in 1994, The Journey would chronicle Panama’s role in the
Triangle Trade and emancipation for his fellow black Panamanians, as it cultivate
with his homeland’s hope for a bright optimistic outlook that await them, for whom
Danilo performs with true mastery and pride. Billed as a two-part suite, The Past
offer a glimpse of his ancestor’s past—and then to Time Present, as it reflects on
Panama’s present day life which also includes dedications to Emilio Salvador and
Dizzy Gillespie. A devout black Panamanian nationalist, The Journey showcases
his deepest regards to those have who accompanied on this difficult journey from
human history to what the Africans, Indians from North to South America and the
other races who have given the world’s cultures that even contributed to the vast
humanitarian of wealth that is proud (and must be treasured!) with an honourable
respect to the highest authority so we could keep building an even brighter world
where humanity can live in peace, dignity, pride and solidarity.

Note: Now here is another jazz classic from the 1990's that needs to belong in the
MP3 Department on Amazon.com, because it will give this masterwork even more
recognition and success. So let's give Amazon.com the chance to bring Danilo's
second hit CD to finally bring it right into the MP3 department where it belongs.
