Superb travel tale - 2 brothers' epic cycle ride from the Bangladesh coast to the centre of the Gobi Desert - but it's true! This is not Jules Verne, this is an account of a charity fund-raising event that took place in the mid 80s and inspired me to go to Asia and, specifically, Tibet.

A real adventure! 25 Sep 2007
Format:Hardcover
A fabulous read about two men's journey from Bangladesh to the point on land furthest from any sea. They cycled over the Himalayas, and across the Gobi desert. Tremendous feats of human endurance, even more so as they vowed never to carry food with them but to rely on local hospitality, and never to carry more than one litre of water. Inspiring and climactic, and all in the name of charity. Nicholas Crane appears regularly on tv now (Coast, Great British Journeys) and has written other books, but twenty years since the adventure it is still a phenomenal story, well told, and I have read it several times. Once started, I cannot put the book down. In terms of style, the aspect of man versus environment and the dynamism of the writing and action, it reminded me of Andy McNab's "Bravo two zero" without the death and destruction, but I don't suppose either author will like the comparison. The photos are mainly black and white, but this is a minor gripe, and leaves the door open for a book of colour photographs taken on the journey. Read this book, and shake your head in disbelief as it unfolds; I did!
