Product Description

Product Description

'The thrilling true account of a famous woodsman, scout & guerilla leader during the formative years of the American Nation' In the evocative pages of Rogers own journal we are taken through a landscape of dark untrodden forest where danger from hostile Indians and the French Army threaten every step. Famous exploits of guerilla warfare are graphically told, including battles and ambushes on America's lakes, the devastating 'Fight on Snowshoes' and the raid against the Abanakee's village at St, Francis, recounted across time by Rogers himself.

From the Publisher

This book of Rogers journal in its unedited and unabridged form. It is not a facsimile – all the typesetting is new, clean and legible.

It forms part of a series of military titles published by Leonaur. You can read part of Rogers narrative on our website – leonaur.com which also carries news of forthcoming titles. This book is one of several in our ‘Military Commanders’ series. Rogers is expensive and very rare on the antiquarian market but it is now available at normal paperback price.

There’s also a hardcover cloth bound with dustwrapper version at a price less than some facsimile paperbacks. This book will not appear on the publisher’s remainders market. Enjoy.

In history there have been many truly exceptional human beings. Robert Rogers is undoubtably one of them. His journal, in his own words, covers only a short period of his life when working for the English army in New England during the French Indian War. His writings express no bravado or intention to impress the reader with his achievement. If anything he underplays his exploits. Yet it is impossible to read this work without being in genuine awe of the man whether he is leading an intelligence gathering expedition against the French, many miles behind their lines, or planning tactics with or being consulted by the commanding English generals. He clearly impressed his superior officers in those troubled times just as he does us nearly two hundred and sixty years later. This is must read for anyone with an interest in this fascinating period.

Interesting if you are a fan of Major Rogers 9 Oct 2009

It is a pretty interesting book from the aspect that these are his own entries. Remember it is a journal, not a novel. It is just short entries regarding his outings, his men and what he did. It's another way to gain insight into this man. I liked it, but don't expect edge of your seat, or great stories, it's just a diary.

Sometimes the history of America appears to comprise of little of note from the arrival of the Pilgrim Fathers from an intolerant England to the justifiable expulsion of the British after the War of Independence. However,in the intervening period a world wide war was fought between the British and the French which would decide which European power would dominate the globe militarily, in trade, influence and language. When that conflict came to the English speaking colonies populated by folks with names like Rogers and Washington the matter of 'sides' was simple. The principally red coated troops that opposed the French and their Indian allies was the army of Americans at the time. American regiments and militia whose lineage has continued to this day fought by their side, but this was a British army commanded by British generals so it is unsurprising that the line of the Royal Americans can today be found among the ranks of The Rifles in today's British Army. There was no more significant military man of this period than American born Robert Rogers and his spirit remains alive within the Rangers of the United States Army, though he was forever a soldier of the Crown. Rogers was probably not alone among his peers in his understanding of what was necessary to wage war in the terrain, climate and against the Indians of North Eastern America . But this remarkable military man of the 18th century innovated an entirely new type of military unit- not so long after the organisation of the British Army by numbered regiments- which not only was a highly effective force for his own war but which in principle has been adopted by every army of modern times.Rangers fought on both sides during the War of Independence and we may see Rogers' influence again and again in the following years-with Forsyth and his Scouts,in the Boer Commandos,in Rimingtons Guides, with T.E Lawrence and his team,in Wingate's Chindits, the SAS,SBS,Seals and to any number of 'special forces' units that exist today. There was just one Robert Rogers and one Journal wherein the highly influential 'Rules of Rangering' appear. His originality, importance and influence is incalculable and rarely more relevant on the battlefield than today.Rogers remains an incredibly important American military figure and his book is nothing less than a fountainhead.
