Review

"Hargreaves is a distinguished journalist and academic with a fine track record of editorial integrity and incisive thought."

Product Description

Almost everyone reads the newspaper, browses the Internet, listens to the radio or watches TV. Journalism has an indelible effect on our worldview--from the fight against global terrorism to the American presidential elections, celebrity scandal to the latest environmental coups. Hargreaves uses his unique position within the media to examine how we get this information and the many practical, political and professional decisions that the journalist has to make, as part of the process of delivering that information to us. Is journalism the 'first draft of history' or a dumbing-down of our culture and a glorification of the trivial and intrusive? In this intriguing book Ian Hargreaves argues that the core principles of 'freedom of the press' and the necessity of exposing the truth are as vital today as they ever were.

This was a good read and (for obvious reasons) better written than some of the other 'very short introductions'. It seemed to be a bit more about the issues surrounding journalism and the history and political context of journalism rather than journalism itself. Though, I suppose journalism is only whatever it's surrounding context dictates and for this reason the book was informative.

Just what it says: a very short introduction 16 Nov 2011
By Franklin Loeb - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This fine short text, replete with photos and other graphics, clearly and cogently discusses concepts relevant to journalists and, for that matter, anyone who writes non-fiction for the general public.

I found Hargreaves' discussion of ethics (especially conflicts of interest), objectivity, and the ever-agglomerating corporate media giants informative and useful. The author has clearly spent time "in the trenches" so I appreciate his insights on "journalism as entertainment."

I do disagree with the author's contention that "web journalism has not led to the birth of anything distinctive" in the field of journalism, but his insights on Matt Drudge, blogging, and the profusion of news are well worth reading.

But what about what I read and see? 6 May 2007
By Robert A. Rubin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I was hoping for an outsiders viewpoint of what I read and see every day. What I got was an outsiders viewpoint of what he reads and sees daily. While "continental" journalism might be interesing, what is happening to journalism here is of greater interest to me. I really didn't get what I thought I would be getting in this book. Too bad, and maybe a "headsup" for any of the other Very Short Introduction books.
