Book Description

Ever since she had her own children in her early twenties, Ellie Ryan was determined to become a midwife - 'the best job in the world'! After her children started school, Ellie began the demanding training she needed to achieve her ambition.

Ellie kept a blog-style journal throughout her training; the result combines laughter and friendship with poignant reminders that life is never as simple as we would like it to be. There are high points as Ellie takes steps towards reaching her goal; gaining confidence in her profession and helping women bring their babies into the world. On the other hand, Ellie worries that she will never have what it takes to become 'a proper midwife' and feels terrible guilt about the detrimental effect her pursuit of this career could be having on her family. This real-life story provides an intimate and candid account of the author's journey towards becoming a midwife and the struggle to balance her professional and family life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for aspiring midwives 14 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback
As a student midwife about to start this academic year, I found Ellie's book gave a really good insight as to what to expect as a student midwife.

The book not only talks about her struggles with completing the course but also the effects it had on her family life and this to me was a real eye opener.

I would recommend anyone who is aspiring to become a midwife to read this book so that they can gain a real understanding of the demands of the midwifery degree course.

Well done Ellie! Looking forward to reading your next book as a Newly Qualified Midwife ;)

I bought this book after reading about it on a student midwife forum. I begin my midwifery training in Sept 2012 and wanted an inside view from someone who had already done it. This book is written very well and pulls no punches. It highlights the highs and, more importantly for me, the lows. The author clearly loves both her family and her career - I honestly felt as though I was going through all of it with her, she deserves full credit for being able to draw the reader in so completely. I have recommended this book to everyone who will be in my cohort, and I have also encouraged my husband to read it!! It is informative, enthralling and, in my opinion, a must-read book for all student midwives and those aspiring to be student midwives.
