5.0 out of 5 stars No midgies? 13 July 2012
By Monkey
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The only thing absent from Dr Johnson's account of his and Boswell's trip around Scotland is the midgies (or may be he did mention them and I just didn't notice) but as an account of travel in the North before tourists or even roads it is a fascinating account of life in the throws of change, moving from a tribal way and in many cases moving out of Scotland altogether with the highland clearances.
A rattling good read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Untrustworthy edition 27 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This seems to be the same edition as freely available on and contains the same unfortunate misprints. For example, on the very first page, in Boswell's dedication, appears the phrase 'you have a tide to this address'. After much puzzling over it, I checked the scanned page on Google books and found the actual words to be 'title to this address'.

Overall this version is readable enough, although its unreliability made me turn to the Penguin edition in the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars . 12 April 2013

Who wouldn't be delighted to find the public domain list of FREE classic literature. This is fantastic. All the titles I've always wanted to read and for free - this is my kind of kindle heaven. I love the way they arrive on your kindle, they're so quick, it's like magic. Thank you public domain!

4.0 out of 5 stars Tour Guide 31 Jan. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Interesting from two particular points of view: Johnson's astoundingly rude and overbearing character; and the difficulties of travelling in the wilds of Scotland just a couple o fhundred years ago. Boswell must have been a descendant of Job.
