Most Helpful Customer Reviews

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Janette Ray on 11 Nov. 2013
Format: Paperback
This little Shire book is a great read and is packed with useful information on this famous founder of the confectionery firm of Rowntree and Co. subsequently taken over by Nestle. The book is much more than a nostalgic look at those household chocolate names we all know, it provides fascinating detail on the work Rowntree undertook as a Quaker and a politician. His influence on the welfare of workers, in adult education and the temperance movement as well as his contribution to the landscape of of City of York in establishing the model village of New Earswick are all covered in this 64 page book. The contemporary relevance of Joseph Rowntree lives on. He drafted a document that has become known to historians as the Founder's Memorandum which established the three charitable trusts which were to bear his name: These continue to work to tackle poverty and social disadvantage today. This book is an object lesson in how to fit a lot of detail into a short but eminently readable book.
