I have just received this eagerly awaited volume. Will review when I have completed, but wanted to say that the printing errors mentioned in earlier reviews appears to have been fixed, the pages in my edition are all present and correct

First shipments have pages printed out of order--problem fixed! 28 May 2014
By Vir desideriorum - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
The first shipment is arriving now and alas, there are pages printed out of order, beginning with what should be page 528. This is an absolutely unacceptable printing error and no one should order until Ignatius Press corrects this. I will update the rating when this is corrected, since otherwise, obviously, this is a five-star publication.

UPDATE 7/26/14: As long as you order from Ignatius directly (which will be slightly more inconvenient and expensive) you'll get the corrected version. I don't trust Amazon to have the problem corrected in their stock (seems one reviewer below got sent a defective copy twice), but perhaps they do. Ignatius certainly does, so go there for the time being. I'm updating my review to 5 Stars--a beautiful edition. One dreams of the day when one can review all sixteen volumes as they sit prominently placed in one's personal library. Profound thanks to Fr. Fessio and all in any way responsible for bring the Ratzinger Werke to English.

Printing error 30 May 2014
By GarcD - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Very unfortunate that , as the other reviewers have noted, Ignatius Press missed the major printing error that occurred in the final third of the book. I'm hoping they will rectify this soon.

I've perused the selection and was somewhat baffled by the organization of the volume. The chapters/sections are arranged oddly --sometime by book title, other times by discrete themes, and other times by "genre" (eg book reviews or homilies). Furthermore, the collected works are not in any discernible chronological order. So while I'm pleased to have his liturgy related writing in one volume, I'm dismayed by the overall organization. Anyone interested in discerning the progression of Ratzinger's thought will not be able to do it with this volume. Further, I simply doubt that this is the near-complete works (as I go through the text more rigorously, I will reevaluate my current position). For example, the volume only includes 5 homilies and 2 book reviews? Really?

It would have been useful to have a more critical editing of the text/articles and include cross references (and a detailed index) and textual analysis. Very little (if any) information is provided by the editors about the original publication chronology and background of the Cardinal's writing. Finally, I understand that Pope Benedict wanted to have his work published under his birth name, which suggests that he didn't want his pre-papacy writing to be confused with his papal writings. However, it would have been fascinating to include as an appendix relevant papal texts such as Summorum Pontificum and his various addresses. Taken together, these omissions really weaken the value and use of this volume.

The best theological writing on the liturgy 13 Aug. 2014
By Dr. Peter A. Kwasniewski - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
The content of this volume is wonderful beyond description, so I wish only to point out that the printing errors have been corrected, and Amazon has in stock perfectly fine editions. (I know the frustration, because I bought an original copy and had to return it, but now I am happily reading my new copy, which has no pagination problems.)

Those who gave this book a low review for errors of the printer should consider revising their reviews to reflect the content rather than an accidental error that has nothing to do with Ratzinger.

Do NOT buy this edition ... yet 31 May 2014
By Ryan P. Hilderbrand - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
This volume is full of great works by Joseph Ratzinger on the question of the sacred Liturgy. Well worth your money ...

HOWEVER, after p. 526, the pages are all out of whack. The correct information is printed on the correct pages, but the page order is messed up. One would think this would have been caught in pre-publication, but (I suppose) Ignatius Press was too eager to get this to print.

Wait for a second printing before you buy this wonderful book.

Defective printing, alas. 5 Jun. 2014
By Michael J. Ortiz - Published on Amazon.com

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and his readers deserve better than this botched printing.

Ignatius: send a new, correct edition to everyone who bought--in good faith--the defective printing.
