5.0 out of 5 stars Two Haydn Masses to enjoy 21 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase
This is a lovely recording of Haydn's last and greatest setting of the mass. I bought it because we are currently rehearsing it for our choral society's next concert, and I like to listen to a recording while driving around - it always sounds different from what I am used to hearing in the bass section of the chorus. "Harmoniemesse" does not readily translate into English. The literal translation would be "Harmony Mass", but "Harmonie" was the current term for a wind band in Haydn's day and the work acquired its name because of the emphasis that Haydn gave to the wind section in his orchestration. "Wind Band Mass" would therefore be more accurate, but too much is then lost in translation. As a bonus, the recording includes Haydn's Little Organ Mass, which is an accurate and descriptive translation of this gem.
