Book Description

In 17th century Europe, the arrival of Grantville raised many questions, among them "What does freedom of religion really mean?"

Certainly the Jews of Europe want to know. Meanwhile, one man also has to live his life.

A thought provoking and engrossing novel by Douglas Jones set in Eric Flint's 1632 Universe.

An earlier version of this story was serialized in the Grantville Gazette.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Combonation of stories from a Jew's perspective. 4 Mar. 2014
By Elizabeth - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a combonation of three stories from the Grantville Gazette magazines. It is a terrific set of stories following one Jewish man from before the Ring of Fire on the road moving/fleeing from one place to another to escape the war in Germany all the way through to founding a new synagogue in Grantsville and all his adventurres between. Great story, wonderful characters, and a fully fleshed out story. This is a great book if you do not already own the editions or of you prefer to read it without scouring different editions to find the stories but since there is no new material or rewrites if you already have the storiesand do not mind the looking through multiple volumes, why bother? It all depends on where the reader is coming from.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK Ring of Fire story 4 Aug. 2013
By Robert - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have long been a fan of the Ring of Fire series published by Baen. I found this book acceptable, but not as interesting as most of the published Ring of Fire series beginning with Eric Flint's "1632." Note. I have read several other of these new Ring of Fire Press Fiction books and they were of more interest to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Joseph Hanauer" rests on the top shelf of ROF fan fiction. Buy it, read it, be glad. 24 Sept. 2014
By Andy McKinney - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love the ROF books and think Flint is a genius for allowing fan fiction to expand the borders of his imagined universe. Much of the fan scribed fiction is of the high end of the amateur scale of things. Douglas W. Jones brings the level of writing up a notch all by himself.
At first I thought "Joseph Hanauer" was simply a very informative, very detailed description of Jewish life in the 1630's in Germany. The first part of the story had that flavor. But as the tale spun out, the links between the various characters gathered density and greater and greater interconnectivity. By the end I realized that I had been gifted with a warm and human story wrapped up in a vast stream of data about how people actually lived their lives in our shared era. Amazing scholarship and excellent word smithing all in one package.
This is a really fine piece of work and should serve as a marker for future fans to emulate in their attempts.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Tale Of the Jews of the 17th Century 17 Jun. 2014
By Amazon Customer - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
First off, I'm an avid 163x-verse fan! This story personally touched me as someone who is Jewish himself. I had read some reviews by others who expected explosive action. Knowing that this was more of a personal tale of refuges on the group; I read it with an open mind. It perfectly depicted how Jews of that age would have behaved in my opinion.
