Biography

José Carreras, one of the legendary "Three Tenors," was born Josep Carreras (Josep is his Catalan name, the equivalent of the Castilian Spanish José) in Barcelona in 1946. He began singing at a very early age; family lore holds that he serenaded passengers on a voyage home from Argentina when he was only five. He was inspired by the film biography The Great Caruso, starring Mario Lanza, and is… Read more in Amazon's Jose Carreras Store

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Catalan tenor José Carreras himself provided the idea behind this concept album. He hired mostly English lyricists, including Don Black and Jeremy Sams, to turn a number of much-loved orchestral melodies into songs. The result is not entirely a success. Black chooses to set the last movement of Dvorák's New World Symphony to the words "There is a brave new world that's eager to rise; we are the brave new world--we must get it right". Sams meanwhile attempts to make a love song out of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, but his lyric "Searching in the night, I found the light, I found the key" evokes the image of someone locked out. Flanders and Swann they ain't. The disc also includes Liszt's Liebestraum No. 3, Chopin's Etude, Op. 10 No. 3 Tristesse, Albinoni's Adagio, the third movement of Brahms's Third Symphony, Beethoven's Pathétique Sonata and the intermezzo from Mascagni's Cavellaria Rusticana in song form. Their only benefit is that a lyric can make a melody memorable. Carreras sings with heroic tone but enunciates in that Spanish waiter English which sends housewives into paroxysms. --Rick Jones

4.0 out of 5 stars Jose Carreras - Passion, 21 Sep 2005

This is a suberb album for those wishing to introduce themselves to the world of classical music and opera.

The soothing, melow, tenor voice of Carreras glides over contemporary lyrics sung to familiar classical pieces.

Not for the purist, but as a light relaxing work that may broaden the listeners interest in the classical music and operatic genre's, then it's hard to beat.

Pour a glass, sit back and enjoy.

I LOVE everything about this Album!

I hadn't purchased an Album by Jose Carreras for more than twenty years - I then stumbled upon this!

I'm not ashamed to say that although I always thought Jose a very attractive man, it was the eye-catching warm red glow effect and artwork of this release that first drew me to it, and then reading that most of the Songs were sung in English - which makes a refreshing change in this genre - I just had to have it! The image of Jose is hypnotizingly and intoxicatingly erotic - the 'five o'clock shadow' is very, very appealing...

I've read quite a few critical and negative Reviews on several other Sites about this Album - but I'm not sure why people don't like this release... It may well be that some people are a bit 'snobbish', and don't like to hear old favourite classical Pieces and operatic voices singing in English. It has to be said of course that it can sound rather 'clumsy' at times - but that's not the Singer's fault - but the English language!

Thirteen gorgeous Tracks here, and I suggest you listen in a dim-lit room and gaze into the handsome face and hypnotic eyes of Jose in this gorgeous CD artwork (with perhaps a glass of Wine as another Reviewer has suggested) and you'll simply be carried away into a perfect dreamland...

This Album is suitable for all - but the wrapping and the content should have the ladies swooning in the millions...

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and soul stirring, 26 Nov 2000
By G. Sawaged - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: José Carreras - Passion (Audio CD)
I am sure that most people know Jose Carreras as one of the Three Tenors. His reluctancy though, to confine himself to opera, has made his style of singing more accessible to everyone. His rich, velvety voice reaches out and touches our very souls. This cd covers some of the most romantic music ever, given new life with lyrics, and he sings them all with such passion. And so, this album is at the same time both intensely familiar, yet dramatically new. This is a wonderful album, guaranteed to stir the soul. Although, of course it may not appeal to those Classical Purist types, but then, who cares.

From the first note to the last, Jose Carreras has-once again-reminded both loyal fans and new friends what a lyric tenor voice should sound like! He's magnificent! From Ave Maria to Brave New World, his voice carries you on a wonderful journey of sound. Powerful as the opera and gentle as a breeze! A definite must for fans and new friends!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful. I cried., 18 Jan 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: José Carreras - Passion (Audio CD)
I heard this CD while doing dishes on Christmas Day. With all of the bussel, it was hard to get a true appreciation for the size of the music. I finally took the time to purchase the CD and played in in my car. By the time I drove home, I was in tears.

The music is relaxing, uplifting, and introspective. It is power and heart and love. You can listen alone or with a friend; a glass of fine wine to compliment the relaxation. You can play it in the background and pick up on only some of the sounds to remind you of the power of the music.

You can even do yoga to it. And while you are stretching and practicing breath control, think of the discipline and control and power Jose must have to do what he does. Thank You Mr. Carrares
