This book just about fits the product description, but it's seriously lacking in some basic stuff. If you're a complete beginner and you want a "do this, do that, click here, get this!" type of walkthrough then it's... ok, I suppose but sometimes the instructions contradict themselves. When you don't get the expected results then there's no comeback, no reasons why it might not have worked - nothing. I've gone through one exercise to generate submenu items multiple times and I still can't get the result the book tells me to expect and have no clue why this might be - have started looking on the forums to find out what I'm doing wrong.

Other than that, there's no explanation of the concepts. Bear in mind, Joomla's got some fairly complex things going on, so when the book starts saying "do this in menu manager, but add this as a category, then link the category to the menu item, but tell the menu manager to use the article manager, and create submenus like this..." it can get confusing.

It's important to understand the way the different managers work together and I just haven't got this from that book. It attempts to explain it, but very briefly and I still have no idea. I regularly code with html, css, javascript and sometimes php, so I'm not incapable of understanding concepts - I just couldn't get them with this book.

Given the choice again, I'd probably work through the joomla website tutorials and wait for a better book rather than spend the money on this. I also don't think it's up to date as some of the screenshots don't match the 1.6 version I'm using - despite the description saying it's for this version.

Unfortunately, this book causes more problems than it solves and you would probably be better off using good old fashioned trial and error. I've used a number of Dummies books in the past and found them to be quite good at addressing subjects I am unfamiliar with. This book merely causes confusion.
The step-by-step approach doesn't always produced the desired results (sometimes there are steps missing and sometimes the instructions are simply wrong). Parts of the book read as though the sections and exercises were out of sequence. Sometimes you find yourself following the step-by-step instruction without really knowing what the objective is - at other times you achieve the objective without knowing how you accomplished it. I found myself wasting hours backtracking, trying to figure out where I went wrong - only to discover it wasn't always me who was wrong.
My advice would be to avoid this book and look elsewhere.

I'm a relatively experienced amateur website developer - I've used PHP / ASP / HTML / CSS quite a bit to create sites in the past. I've also created a couple of sites using Wordpress. Like another reviewer said, in places the book leaves you hanging and like them i've been unable to create the submenus - I don't think that all the necessary steps are described. I would agree with another reviewer who said that this is the worst Dummies book they've read. I don't know who was responsible for reviewing this book prior to publishing but they have failed - this book seems like a rush job.

This book is entirely based upon the idea of using the sample installation website as a means of creating your own custom site by deleting, changing, adding elements. It's like giving someone a car and saying "Well, simply tear it apart and rebuild it to be what you want!".

Its biggest failing is that it does not even attempt to explain the conceptual frame-work behind the system. The Glossary is totally useless. There are many misleading and contradictory statements.

This is a very lazy way to write a book. A complete waste of money!
