1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and badly edited/proof-read 1 Jan 2014
Format:Paperback
This book could have been about half the thickness (and therefore presumably considerably cheaper). It contains a great deal of repetition, as mentioned by others, but also completely pointless explanations (does anyone contemplating creating content in Joomla! really need an explanation of what 'Save' and 'Save & Close' do?).

The editing/proof-reading is poor. There are tables with headings that are not shown correctly, and grammatical errors - e.g. how exactly can I help my predecessors without the use of a TARDIS? I suspect that I may be able to offer considerably more help to my successors! How was that missed? The quality of the content is more what I would expect of something self-published on-line rather than having been checked by a proof-reader and multiple editors!

Even worse, there is advice that is plain wrong. The section on security says that PHP should have magic quotes GPC turned on. You can't install Joomla! 3 at all (without a hack which is not advised) if it is turned on, and the advice to do so directly conflicts with what is said in the section on installation.
There is some useful information given but this book is not worth the money and you'll get more useful information on Joomla! (which itself I am finding to be an excellent CMS) from the Internet.

Overall, it seems that this is a very poor update of the original edition for an earlier version of Joomla! and the lack of attention to detail for the new version is very disappointing

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful all round 16 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A nicely well written book explaining all of the basic joomla functions and how the system works. The only drawback is that (due to the detailed nature of the explanations) there is quite a bit of repetition of process meaning you tend to skim through some of the sections. For a person new to the Joomla system tho it was a great introduction.

3.0 out of 5 stars screenshots and fonts too small, google search still necessary 26 May 2013
By Peter Høgstedt - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Some of my problems did not find an obvious solution through the book but had to be resolved browsing the internet. You get a thorough review of the obvious Things but the 'how do I' is not rewarding. One might say that the book tries to cover a lot of detail conerning Joomla! - whereas it should have used the needs of a website developer as a starting point. I am 61 years old, and I find that the screenshots are barely legible (and that a lot of their content should have been cut off in order to highlight important parts). Also the letters could easily be a bit larger.

2.0 out of 5 stars A reference, not a learning device 16 May 2013
By Redsue - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book probably covers every aspect of Joomla!3 that exists. However, the information is arranged in an encyclopedic structure that will not facilitate a new user's ability to start with the basics and then build upon that. The obvious details are explained over and over in a rigidly structured manner, but there is no overview or point of entry to allow a new user to grasp an overview of this software. The figures often did not illustrate what they claimed to, and outright errors exist. I found the book more of a dusty broom closet of information than a dynamic and intelligent virtual classroom.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unless you have plenty of money, Do Not Waste it on this book 27 Feb 2014
By Edward B. Roberts - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The book is over 400 pages long (2nd Edition). Most of the Joomla editors work in the same way and the author has generated page after page walking you through the use of the same editor for many many different purposes.
I bought the book for a Nook. The illustrations are not visible at all. Useless.
The focus of the book is to tell you What to do but not How to do it. It is nearly devoid of concrete examples.
You will do better using the Joomla documentation.

If you are rich and like thick useless books--by all means buy this. Otherwise, save your money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Instruction 28 Jan 2014
By Starman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am basic computer literate and most of the problems I am encountering stem from my inexperience. For example I uploaded photos to my joomla management area and then to my website. But they would only appear as a small icon. It took me a day to figure out that my camera was set to capture way more information than joomla could handle. It would have been nice if a brief note had been placed where I could see it. But I still recommend this book for its basic description of how things work.
